So let's just say...
That some idiot ignores the belt warning light and the temperature light and keeps driving a 1985 928S and the car stops runiong while driving down the road at 25 mph. What would you guess the damage would be? The car was making a rattle/bearing noise (water pump) noise prior to the car not running and had the smell of burnt rubber when the car died. I am asuming the idiots timing belt broke because of a water pump failure. Any coments to said idiot will be taken as a direct insult to the drivers stupidity. And no offence will be taken. (what dumb**** would do the above described situation?) Mark

It would be a drag race between damage from the broken belt, like bent valves and such, vs. overheating damage that would start at warped heads and blown headgaskets, and work down through the block and pistons from there. If there's good news buried in all this, it's that the engine will come out and the heads will be off for either problem, and inspection then would give you all the bad news at once.

Guy at work's son did very similar drive it till it won't go any more despite warning lights twice on a 944. Both before and after he and his dad rebuilt the motor. Dad didn't help after the second time. I seem to remember hearing his son is living in jail now.

That's some idiot. However, qualified to be a salesman at a Kia dealership....Might need a government bailout to pay for that mistake....Best of luck to your friend

It normally takes to temper out of the block on a AL motor when driven that long, they wont hold head bolts OR timeserts from what I have seen on other motors and that is if it is still square.
That is if it ran long enough to get that hot, I still would not take a chance on it.

On the good side..I think I know where said Idiot can get a spare 85 engine (probably for a good price) in the Pac NW...
If you're lucky the overheat didn't kill it and with a new waterpump you'll be on your way..otherwise..belt fried, snapped, valves gone..or overheat warped the heads...

Kinda depends on what broke first and what broke last and how hot it got in between.
Could be a typical timing belt failure with bent valves and fixed by doing the top end, or as suggested time to find a new motor.
I wouldn't call it stupid either, pretty common mistake a lot of drivers make, not knowing when to shut the motor off, coast to the side and call for a tow.

Apparently the bright red light with the ! isn't a strong enough clue. If I were an engineer at a car company, there would be a loud voice that comes on a few seconds after the warning light if the engine hasn't been shut off. I don't think that the warning message that I'd have that voice yell out would make it into the production version of the car though.
