Had one customer who hit a rock and punched a hole in the oil pan....so he drove it to his mechanic....he made it there ! ruined the engine but made it there.......Another lady with a GTS hit something and damaged the air oil engine cooler she too drove until it would not go any further....her insurance company totalled the car ! With the digital dash it must have lit up like the Vegas Strip but she overlooked it. When your car is talking to you it is best to listen When the water pump siezes the back side of the t belt is rubbing against the now stationary pulley and gets real hot real fast.....if you shut it down the belt will then vulacanize to the pulley and then on the next attempt to start the car you break the belt and on all 32 V cars bend most if not all the valves. If the engine got too hot it can cause the piston rings to relax and not seal properly ever again.

Does ignoring major problems make them go away in your world? Man, I'd pick up and move there in a heartbeat!

I am surprised by our resident professional mechanics' reactions to this! They have posted the most sympathetic and forgiving comments in the thread! I guess they have learned to avoid telling their clients what idiots they were...

Good luck with your learning curve, Mark. Get yourself a new engine and take apart the old one for forensic fun.

Doesn't much help to kick a man while he's down. I think by admission, he already knows what an idiot he is; he was just looking for confirmation.

I thought I had a gram of brains in my head but I destroyed a GTS engine by trying to power up a 3000 foot vertical rise, and more or less ignored a falling oil pressure gauge and a rising temp gauge over the course of about 5 minutes. When the temp gauge got above 210 I pulled over to the right lane and slowed down but I didn't stop. Only when I rolled up the windows did I hear the death rattle and the engine let go a few seconds later, perforating the oil pan. The car had done 900 flawless miles in the previous 24 hours, and checked out and sounded fine the last time I'd stopped for gas.

Next time I'll stop.

Hard not to feel sorry for some one who knows they have made a mistake, and it is harder to get some one to gladly give you large sums of money while kicking them.

He is not the first and wont be the last to have done this.

Try telling some one that they have just spent a weeks pay on tow bills, diagnosis and a new fuel level sender that all that was wrong with the car is that they forgot to put gas in it, and be nice about it.

I have only know a few that repeat a mistake that takes a engine out.

I didn't mean it in a kick-the-guy way, I meant it in a have-a-laugh-about-it way. Nevertheless, I think our friend Mark's error in judgment kind of goes a bit beyond "mistake" (like a politician's lie kind of goes a bit beyond "mis-speaking"). But clearly, some of the resulting disdain must have slipped through my fingers when I was typing. I just don't understand pushing the envelope like that when the stakes are so high, and on a car I am so fond of! Would it be as understandable to try to make drive that last mile home if you had a fire in the engine bay because you have a good extinguisher at home?!? Don't think so. So why push it the last mile home when you clearly have a huge mechanical problem? Isn't that what tow trucks (and insurance) are for?

Anyway, I do (and did!) wish Mark good luck with the fix!

I can understand why you tried to squeeze out a mile. That is one stressful mile for sure when you know the possible outcome. I say it's time to see what damage there was. If you don't have a major expense consider yourself lucky! I would also look at possible mods that can be done when you repair/replace what you have. Nice set of heads and some headers come to mind! Nothing like breaking something to give yourself the opportunity to buy more power!

Actually I was thinking of a 350 chevy (let the insults begin) it may be a cheaper fix. other than that I am taking offers on a 1985 928S 5 speed good condition. I am thinking of taking my loss as a learning lesson and looking for a S4! Or maybe I will just get out of 928's all together because I am to stupid to own a 928. (part joking and part realist) Mark
Thanks for all your posts I get the thought process of thinking I am really stupid and take no offense to the posts.

Post #9 is the important one here, echoed in post 21.

If its the car in the avatar, and its still that sharp looking, and a 5 speed.... just repower it with a spare engine. That's the inexpensive route.

Everyone does things that are clearly stupid in hind sight.

Nothing wrong with trying to figureout what your options are for a fix.

If you have the time and the desire, pulling the engine and doing a post mortum would be great information and you never know, it may not be as bad as you think. Either way the engine will need to come out.

Hate to see a fellow '85 turn into a parts car when a replacement engine would seem a viable, albeit expensive, option and I also am not a fan of Chevy conversions (personal preference).

Just the conversion kit will cost more than a engine if you can find one local at a good price!
