I hate to say it, but who ever this happened to... Those last few miles were likely the most expensive ones he has ever driven, and hopefully will ever drive.
I've had two people drive my 928s when timing belt warnings came on. NONE of them even reacted to the warnings!
Apparently the bright red light with the ! isn't a strong enough clue. If I were an engineer at a car company, there would be a loud voice that comes on a few seconds after the warning light if the engine hasn't been shut off. I don't think that the warning message that I'd have that voice yell out would make it into the production version of the car though.

Your friend should not be allowed near anything more mechanical than a Schwinn built in 1953.

If anyone can continue to step on the gas once that light comes on without flinching, I don't know how. I had to recover my seats after seeing that thing come on for me once.
Driving with the temp above normal and the other indications: Just can't fathom that.
On the bright side, you can get a complete '85 motor for a fairly reasonable price. Consider it the price of finding out what exactly is 'the worst that can happen' if you ignore the warnings.

Mark,
What's the story? Is this your '85 you're talking about?
Have you at least looked in the inspection holes in the timing belt covers to see what the belt looks like?
Perhaps there needs to be a PacNW "diagnose my 928" beer and pizza party?
Definitely keep in touch with Tom M about that replacement engine.

And my '88 is laid up right now with similar cooling issues. Was driving home and was noticing the temp gauge seemed to be slightly higher then normal, but wasn't sure if it was my imagination.
No other symptoms, running fine, no warning lights.
Just before my driveway it knocked a few times. I rolled it into the garage and shut it down.
Dared to start it up one more time with the hood open, jumped out, put my hand on the thermostat cover and sure enough it knocked a couple of times. Shut it down immediately.
Keeping my fingers crossed its just a shot water pump.
