Default 86 928 Oil Coming out of the Exhaust Manifold Bolts?

Hello,

I am new to the site and own a 86 32v 928 that I have been trying to fix up. I cant believe I have owned the car 3 years without finding this site, I could have saved my self a lot of diagnostic time. Since I have been reading, I have fixed a lot of electrical problems, so thanks. But this has me stumped. Engine oil looks like it is coming out of the left 2 rear exhaust ports on the head, either the port or the bolts? Things I have done or Checked.

Rear cly head cam plugs, dry not leaking
New cam cover gaskets, not leaking and dry above the exhaust manifold
Cly head to block, no leaks and dry
Right side of engine, ok no leaks
No blue smoke out the exhaust

Any body have any idea’s. It leaks enough to put about 1 to 2 inch dia. puddle after a drive and smells like burning oil at idle. Thanks Chris

Either the valve cover is leaking at the corner or the cam end caps or cam cap plugs are leaking.

I checked the 2 round plugs at the back of the head when the cars up on a hoist, no leaks. I had the car running on the hoist and can see/feel above the manifold, no oil.

take that left side end of the organ pipe off (intake) and slide your hand along the side of the valve cover and take a picture of your hand for us.

If it's not the valv ecover than it's the last cam bearing cap. It needs a sealent between the head and the bearing cap or else it wil lleak. I had the same problem and took me a couple years to find out where the leak was coming from. The last bearing cap is outside of hte valv ecover gasket and if the tow aluminium surfaces don't have a sealant (Loctite 517 or simmilar) it will leak just like in your pics.

Look at your first picture, you can see the cam cover has been leaking.

Ya, there is probably some oil residue left over from the cam covers. I had to "refresh" the intake and did the most of the gasket on the top of the motor.

The rear cam caps, is that just for the exhaust cam or do both camshaft have a cap the extends out past the valve cover. Thanks

If you just did cam cover gaskets you did not clean them very well.
That, in its self, is one reason to get things spotless when working on anything.
A month down the road you are not going to know if that crud is from a leak now or a leak before a repair.

I would vote for the cam cover as well when you remove the left side plenum ( the box looking thing) be careful as it will probably have some oil in it and if there is enough oil in it the oil can leak out of the hose fitting thats at the front of the left plenum. Any rate if it has oil in it then you should also remove the air cleaner and the MAF and inspect the intake for oil as well as the right side plenum clean out the oil and make sure they are dry before installing them.
For the cam covers you might want to remove them and put a bead of hondabond in the groove that the gasket sits in prior to installing the covers with the covers the old finish isnt as smooth as when the parts were new so the gasket may not seal like a new part
