Have you driven in it???:rolleyes: In fact, I can't believe how badly the Vanquish has aged and how dated it is looking to me, when it was one of my favorites not long ago. The designers of the 928 created a timeless classic, I read an article by a neutral party just yesterday stating exactly that. It is also an opinion shared by Jeremey Clarkson. Watch the video! I have a car/friend who owns a diablo, on many occasions I have looked at his car and thought how dangerous it is to drive that when there is roughly 1 foot of hollow space between his feet and his front bumper. |

It appears you'd already made a decision, and I like where you headed w/ finding a supplemental car. What was missing from your OP & subsequent (IIRC) was what type of driving, or more specifically, what type of use were you planning to get out of a replacement? My wife and I have been working through some car identity crisis for some time. We've put alot of thought into what it takes to stay practical and still have fun. Not an easy proposition. The cliffnotes ('06 to present) : -BMW X3 (sport): As we enter into new parenthood and figured this is what you do if you don't want a minivan. Bad assumption and worse car. -BMW 323i : sold to purchase Perl ('87 S4), where the 928 would become my DD. Good decision because the car was plain boring, bad decision because see next -Perl 928 : relieved from DD duty quickly as I learned the car needed to be restored and it was rather special -Chewy 928 : Picked up DD duty for about a year. Did rather well other than the fact is just wasn't suited for the Richmond commute. Not bad, just not good. Car has just under 200K miles, and the little things started to get to me. -Audi A3 : picked up DD in good fashion. Has been fantastic and well suited for the roads in which it travels. Love the DSG and paddle shifter. - VW CC : wifes new DD as she was seriously sick of the X3. Very sound purchase on her part. Summary: The identity issue is not yet over but on the down-swing. Still have the 2 928's, A3, X3, & CC. Chewy and the X3 will be leaving shortly which leaves us with close to the ideal (for us) A3 - my ideal DD, CC - her ideal DD, Perl 928 - our long distance travel car, date car, and fun car. Only thing missing at this point is my light duty track car. ;) And you must think I'm joking, but I'm not. Since I need another car like I need a hole in the head, I'm considering my next replacement for the A3. As much as I like it, it's a FWD. Criteriea are: Modern, RWD, 4 seats, coupe, able to perform reasonable DD duty, and weekend track duty. This is a tall order really, and very few car will meet this criterea. Actually, I've had to rule out some really nice cars (Boxster, Miata, M Coupe). Short list is really short at this point, Audi TT, GS37s. If you'd actually read this far, you see what you are asking is not an easy task. It really takes some serious assessment to make the right choice (sometimes a little trial & error). Hope this helps... I do and will continue to limit how far and when I drive the BHC 928 while I own it. It's too nice to drive in rain/snow etc. and since weather can't be predicted accurately on the East Coast it rules out many of the long distance drives. BUT for the record, I have put 2000 miles on the car in the past 12 months and 2000 during the prior year so I do drive it. I was surprised when I was looking at the miles from last year to this year as I hadn't really paid any attention to it before. I think what I want is a completely different experience. I've owned Sedans (190E, 500E), Hatchbacks (Golf, Speed3), SUV's (CRV, Pilot) and Coupes (Accord, 928) but never a convertible. Until now the only convertibles that excited me were either too expensive or too costly/time consuming to maintain. I like the BoxsterS and I am considering it instead of the Spyder but when optioned out it is almost the same price. Unless I buy one used their is no advantage to the Boxster S. The Spyder really does it for me and its one of the few modern cars I truly like. The slower roads around here would be perfect as the heightened awareness of speed is amplified with the top down. The only drawback is that I will only be able to take one child or my wife for a ride but honestly they rarely go in the 928 as it is so it really doesn't matter. All of this will depend on if I can get my asking price for the BHC, if it doesn't go for my asking price it's staying with me. |
I don't really like Boxsters.
But, I LOVE the Boxster Spyder! I didn't catch if you test drove one or not... if not, let us know what you think! |

Totally, man. What is so great about that is according to this observation, you don't even have to exit your driveway or garage for that matter; a little acoustic enhancement in the garage and it's woody time for tv; excellent way to keep the mileage and wear down and the gas, man the gas -- totally BP (usd to be PC). :crying: |

Soooo I really liked the Spyder but not enough to make me want to sell the 928. The handling is absolutely spot on and it has incredible balance. There was too much traffic to really push the car but you could tell it is extremely capable. Power is similar to the 928 at the low end but when RPM's go up the car really takes off. Sport exhaust was incredible and really enhances the car. What I think I'm going to do is pick up an 08/09 Boxster S over the winter or next year and add to the stable instead selling the 928. I probably won't pursue the AM since it's too much like the 928 and I really want something smaller and lighter. I have to say, the 928 was way ahead of its time and even now it feels really good. Some minor updates will make it even better. Thanks for chiming in everyone, I really do appreciate the chat, opinions and experience. |

Afshin: if you treated the BHC like we treat our 928s (drive in the rain, do the road trips, do a few mods, not worry about the car so much) you may think differently and realize you have a great car now. The BHC may have to go and get something like your old S4 to feel good about using it that way. My car always seems to clean up well after flogging on a road trip, and I know I have used it for what it does well.
In New England, you can't really own a garage queen and have that much fun. The weather is too variable. |

Ah, go out to town and buy the new Lotus Evora. It's the new F355 killer with reliability to be a daily driver (Toyota Camry engine). :jumper:

Lotus is out of the question. Before buying the 928 I had a deposit on an Elise (before introduction) and I didn't pull the trigger. Looking back I'm glad I didn't. Lotus are nice but the fit/finish and overall build quality will never equal a Porsche or other modern production auto. Initial reviews of the Evora do not rate it that well either.
Still haven't found anything that will take my mind off of the Spyder. The only shortcoming it has is the low end torque and depreciation but with exception to an true exotic there aren't many cars that are holding their values these days. |
I think the engine problems/supercessions killed these cars...not the headlights. The cars fell in value and the replacement engines continue to go up. The current cost of a Porsche replacement engine alone exceeds the value of most of these cars....and since virtually everything inside the engine has been superceeded, the guys that are fixing these engines "outside the Porsche factory" are essentially building engines that will run long enough for one to sell the car.
That senario is "French" for junk.

The 996 Turbo is probably a decent car for the money at this point as long as one doesn't give a F about the headlights. I am sticking with the 928 because... just because. Because I want to. No other reason needed. |
Afshin - Here's a thought. Sell the GT to someone who will carry the concourse torch. Buy youself a S or S4 (auto/manual up to you) and enjoy it for the motoring versus getting to factory spec and detailing. Hell a nice S or S4 can be supercharged or stroked and upgrade springs/shocks (WAY?) CHEAPER than buying a DB9 or AM and will outpace them anyway. Nice cars sure but you'll still not drive them in the rain, worry about where you park it etc etc.
Enjoy the 928 for the performance and drive alone would be nice and buy down in the model line up might help that. Just my 2 cents :) |
