So far, the ideal answer for me has been to know someone who runs an auto electric shop. I'm on my third shop owner over a span of 35 years.

The current shop in Marietta (metro Atlanta), is owned and operated by Bill Webster (plus two or three employees). Bill is both knowledgeable and experienced. He will repair my alternator, replacing what needs to be replaced, or he will rebuild it, replacing all normal wear parts plus checking everything else. They test it under load conditions, and they know how to use the equipment, since this is what they do.

I will get the right alternator back, and it will be right. If there is a problem, Bill will take care of it. Bill is also capable of upgrading the alternator and using premium parts if that is what I want. There ARE premium parts available to a rebuilder!

I suspect that most of us are actually near such a shop, and it would be well worth finding it and making a friend out of the owner.

Sounds like a good idea.
