Default Looks like something is missing on my 1979 928 suspension

I finally started looking at my neew 928. I pulkled the front wheels off and there is a dog bone looking component extending down on both sides thsat looks like something should be attached.

Can anyone help me with this?

Thanks
Jim

Your anti-sway bar is missing. You can see one of its mounting brackets lying bare behind it in the photo. I'm going to guess your steering rack boot is split wide as well from the way it looks in the photo.

More importantly, that lower balljoint carrier sure looks like an original aluminum one. That was superseded in 83 by a much stronger steel version. The early ones are subject to catastrophic failure when the ball end suddenly pulls out of the carrier.

That is the 928.343.059.00 "Stabiliser Mounting" , otherwise known as the sway bar link.

Yep, something is missing...

Not only the bar is missing, but the mounting hardware and bolts. Before you address that, put a magnet on the balljoint carrier and make sure its not aluminum.

note from your picture it looks like the jack is on the frame rail , this isnt a good idea as it will crush under the weight of the car only jack on the pads or the bash plates or the center of the front or rear cross member with a block of wood 2x4 about 6 inches long

I placed the jack directly under the jacking point as illustrated in the owners manual and the WSM. On my car it is a raised circular area with a round opening in the center. Is that not correct?

So based on all the response it sounds like a new sway bar is needed but not critical at this point.

Based on what I have read previously and your comments the ball joints are more critical. Will be putting those at the top of the list along with fuel lines.

Thanks
Jim

Yep, that balljoint carrier is critical, but don't forget those rack boots.

Also, you have the rustiest tie rods I have ever seen. You need to inspect their joints for play. It would be good to get this car up in the air and look over all the usual suspects, including the wheel bearings, all balljoints, rear axles (boots and joints), motor mounts, suspension bushings, etc. Good you mentioned the fuel lines too. From what you've shown so far, everything looks like it has never been touched mechanically except for the swaybar removal. There should be a rear swaybar as well.
