PayPal is great but it carries the same risks as a credit card-the buyer can dispute the purchase-whether they don't like the deal, buyer's remorse or otherwise.

Me? I'd take a check and PayPal and make sure it clears. Also, I'd be sure to state that all sales are final including PayPal when the buyer's agreement/bill of sale is written.

just curious, how do you force someone to drive your car "sensibly" or "reasonably" from the passenger seat? and how do you verify the guy isn't "strange" or a "weirdo" ?

Exactly what my Dad did when he bought his 80 928S Euro from Ca. Called a friend that was fairly close, and who's judgement he trusted, and the guy ran over, test drove the car, said good things and the rest is history. Fantastic car. I don't think Dad was ever disappointed about the purchase.

My apologies if this was already covered in the prior posts, but my speed-reading didn't see this basic point. You should have an agreement with the potential buyer of what price the buyer will pay you for the car prior to him flying out to see and drive the car. This is to eliminate wasting your time if he drives the car and then tries to point out areas that in his mind should reduce the selling price of the car. Strike your deal, then let him come and see it and drive it, and if everything that you have represented about the car is validated (which I am sure will be the case) then you get your price. You want to avoid last minute haggling as a negotiation tactic.

Actually, Jim, that reporting requirement sprang from the Drug Exception to the 4th Amendment. And good luck getting your $$$$ back if some armed minion of the State decides to confiscate b/c he's suspicious that you're carrying a "lot." It's up to YOU to prove you weren't doing/planning anything illegitimate. Google "forfeiture."

That said, if you're "mainstream" (i.e., white and well-dressed) and/or in a place where lots of mainstream people are doing a legal cash business, you're unlikely to be hassled by the police. En route, you're on your own, but still pretty safe if you're "mainstream." 5-0 has a pretty well-developed sense of just who it is they are to serve and protect and who falls outside that circle. That's not always, or even usually, evil - just the way of the world as it was and ever shall be.

As for the test drive, the owner gets to drive dramatically, the potential buyer gets to drive. At least I do, if you want to sell your vehicle to me. If you're insured, your insurance should cover a driver who has your permission. Mine does. Mine also covers my liability if I'm driving somebody else's car.

The common thread for $$$$ and exchange seems to be: cash is better, do the deal during business hours so your local banker is available. I prefer to watch the Franklins counted out by the teller anyway - who knows the provenance of bills that arrive in "some guy's" pocket.

As for personal checks to dealers in Iowa: a) it was businesses you were dealing with b) in the same state and maybe the same town or county. LOTS of recourse there if you defraud them _and_ it's a business risk _and_ they have business lawyers, maybe even insurance. Not true with little ol' you and "some guy" from out of state.

All that said, surely you've developed some "a$$hole radar" in your life. Yeah, you could get screwed but life's too short to treat _everybody_ like they're out to screw you. That's why it's called judgment, even when 5-0 decides you're probably legitimate (or not), exercise it.

I would suspect that b/f somebody flies in to pick up and/or pay for the car there is an agreed upon price and assuming that all disclosures have been made regarding shrotcomings, flaws, maintenance and the like there would be no renegotiation.... but IF a pottential buyer were to try and renegotiate a deal after viewing/driving the car I would tell him/her to call a cab back to the airport!!!

If a seller has not been truthful (I know that's absolutely not the case here!) in their description however that's another story.... I have had that happen several times with purchases.... Most memorable, a lagoon green GTS but I digress.

Well, the gentleman in the Seattle area phoned tonight and closed the deal. He will be sending me a deposit check in the mail tomorrow, and will fly in on June 2 to pick up the car and drive it home.

In my phone conversations with him, he has been a great person to deal with.

Turns out he's a Delta captain. Has been a 747 captain for many years with Northwest, and now works for Delta. Apparently Delta has retired their 747 fleet, so he is currently being trained on the Airbus 380 I believe he said.

He has a 9-car garage, and he'll bring pics of the slot where my GTS will fit in! So I think the car will be going to a good home.

I'll put in a plug for Rennlist and let him decide if he wants to introduce himself.

Sad it's sold, you should invest in a red/black 86.5 just to keep involved in the marque.
