Default Need Help! Transmission Fluid fill tips

Before I do anything dumb (like that would happen), I need some help.
I am changing the fluid in the auto trans on MY 1984, I am filling it now, but each time I fill the res tank, then start the car the fluid drops to under the 20 degree line on the res. So I fill it up again, and same thing happens............

So do I just keep filling the res, engine off, start the car, run through the gears, check level, turn engine off and keep filling?

Seems like it is taking a long time............

You are supposed to fill the res with the engine off right?

Yes, it is on lift bars and level.

Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks for the help!

You need to have the engine running when you fill the res. Once you get it to the correct level make sure you have the cap back on the res before you shut it down or you will have a mess on the floor.

Filling up that reservoir, from the manual if I remember correctly, should be done with the transmission on neutral and the engine running, so the oil can be suck up in.

Might be wrong.

Once you get the fluid level correct you will notice that with the engine off the res will be completely filled with trans fluid...that is normal. When you start the engine the level will go down to where you filled it to as fluid is pulled into the trans.

FWIW to fill the trans you would fill till its topped,
then start the car run for 30 seconds then shut off repeat this process a few times about 3 or 4 ,
then you start the engine and leave it running, if you started the car and left the engine running while you were filling from empty, there is a chance that you could damage the transmission as it would be working without the proper level, once the level is close to full then run the engine and go through all of the gear selectors.
If you drained the torque converter and pan then figure it will need about 8 to 9 qts of Dextron 3 or 4

Warning dont go from drive to park or reverse to park unless you shift to neutral and wait a few seconds, all the while with your foot on the brake and the E brake engaged.
If you should put into park from a driven selection its quite possible that one of the rear wheels could be turning and this would have the same effect as putting the car into park with it rolling, this will probably damage the parking pawl and thus a new transmission housing will then be needed.
