Replacing the mains from below, engine in the car, is not going to to save you any money over pulling the motor. That only works well on old flathead Fords and other motors that have no girdle to deal with. Wait till he discovers he can't get the starter bracket off without taking the car half apart.

Your best option is to buy a good used motor, hence the reference to Mark (Anderson), and find a mechanic that really knows 928s. Your mechanic may be a master Porsche mechanic, but most of them were not trained on the 928, and the 928 is a completely different animal.

It is common to replace the rod bearings from below.

Maybe he was thinking the mains were also possible.
