Default 1981 928 Cosmetic Upgrades Opinions and Pics

So I'm looking into doing some slight cosmetic upgrades to my red 81 928. Here is what I'm thinking about. Any opinions or better yet pics of these mods on a red car would be great.

1) Raised lettering on the back. Black or White? I was originally thinking black but then I saw a car with white. The only issue is I don't know where to buy the white lettering, I know where I can find the black.

2) Side Marker lights. Clear or Smoked? I have always hated the way these interupt the flow of the car. Yellow is the most attractive color to the eye, so when you see the amber marker lights your eye is drawn to that spot. For a silver or white car I would go with clear. For a black or gray car I would go with smoked. For a red I don't know. I guess my concern is clears would make the car look to "ricey" and smokes would look out of place. Like I said any pics on a red 928 would be great.

3) Rear Quarter Tint. Looking into tinting out the rear windows. How dark? I think limo tint may look bad, but too light of a tint might not give me my desired effect. Any pics of tiint on red 928 cars would be greatly appreciated.

4) This is really iffy, I need to see pictures first to see if I even like it a little bit or not. I have the cometition package on my car so I have a rear lip spoiler. I like the S4 and GTS spoilers and was wonder what the dual spoiler would look like. My initail reacation is that it would look bad, but I'd like to see it first. I'm sure someone has done this mod to their cars so post a pic please.

Thanks in advance for the help. My eye has trouble seeing a finished project so this will make things a lot easier.

Just my opinion.

I like the clean look w/o the lettering, but there are many around here that have it that looks sharp. I don't think that white would contrast well, a darker color would be the way I would go. Again, just my opinion.

I have the clears on my dark car and think it looks great. Installed a few sets of the smoked ones on dark cars and it looks equally good. For a red car, that will depend on your own personal taste. I think either would look good.

Rear quarters look great real dark, they also have the advantage of protecting the inner quarter panel interior parts too. I'm glad mine are limo dark, you can't see the warping that has occurred.

The S4 tail on an S looks really weird with both on there. Either or for me.

I think it's important to establish a theme for your car. Otherwise it won't flow together.

1. Persoanlly, I wouldn't bother. Some models had stickers in PORSCHE, and that looks nice. Rasied letters? Not gfor me. However, if I had to choose a color, I'd go with black. There are no other white parts to the car, so white would look out of place.

2. Why limit your selection to white or smoked side marker lights? I did my front ones in red. They almost disappear into the car. I did a writeup a LONG time ago. Search for threads under my name. The front corner lenses look best in clear. Get them from HookedOnCars.com.

3. I'd go at least 20% no lighter.

4. Both spoilers looks silly. The work required to take of the S spoiler is too much (unless doing a total repaint), so I say you leave it as it.

Don't forget about other things when working on your "canvas."

Aero Mirrors
Wheels
Brakes
Rotors
Brake lights (little harder to do on an S, but doable)
Engine detailing

That's just a few. Look up BC. He's never driven his 928 becasue he's always taking it apart to powder coat this, tweak that, etc. It can become a sickness if you're not careful.

I put the raised black letters on my red 81 comp package and to be honest I don't really like it. Either the black letter decals (flat) or better yet just the stock recess looks best IMHO.

Not my car and It's not red, but I really like the look/stance of this one:

If you look closer it seem to have GTS mirrors, custom exhaust, fat rims, raised lettering on the rear and a lowered suspension. the rest is original, but very clean

Red cars with black details looks great too as long as it's not taken too far. Keep the red paint deep and glossy and the black details must be completely black.

Hi

I have Limo tint on my rear quarters AND hatch (To keep my Nitrous bottles cool) , but.....visibility is DRASTICALLY reduced from inside out so had to replace interior mirror with LCD screen with a rear-view camera mounted in the centre of rear PU.

Looks good though, but mine is Iris Blue...

All the best Brett

There was recently a 928S -79 for sale here in norway with BOTH the S and S4 spoiler, and I have only one word for it:

Ugly.

Here's my car with 50% front 35% rear. I wanted to go 35% front and 20% rear, but Virginia is strick on their tinting laws.

Great pics guys. Please keep up the postings. So helpful. Thank you.

I like the 35% rear with the 50% fronts. I think that's going to be the way to go for me. Can anyone reccomend some good shops to get this done around Fort Lee/Edgewater NJ?

And the rims, I know they are 17" cup 2's but what size and offset front and back? Are they Porsche or aftermarket?

And where do I find the white "PORSCHE" decals for the rear of the car? I think I'm going to go with black, BUT with the white reverse lights on the 81 it looks good to me in white.

OK, enough talk, please keep posting up the pics!

Any pics out there of people replacing their side markers on red cars?

I would not recommend to do white, but I can custom order it for you. Takes about 3-4 weeks.

My suggestion is to go with black, or silver. I keep those colors in stock.

The answer depends on what you want to achieve. The smoked lenses are a bit dark, and therefore would create a strong contrast to the red. Unless you are trying to make the car look "mean", I think you'd be better off with clear side markers. To finish it up, go clear on the turn signal lenses as well.

Alternatively, you can try Andrew's solution with the red front marker. Again, I would add the clear turn signal lens to clean up the look.

To get rid of the amber in the tail light, you have two options:

a. Paint the amber section in candy apple red trasnlucent color (be careful not to overpaint, or the flasher won't be visible anymore)

b. Replace the amber section with a clear one

If you go too dark, you'll have a real challenge parking the car at night. I did a compromise with medium tint in the rear, and light tint on the side windows.

I have never seen a 928 with dual spoilers that looked good. The two types of spoilers don't go together visually, and there is quite a possibility that they actually increase drag. In addition, you'd have a hard time mounting an S4 spoiler because your hatch is not prepared for it. We've seen many horrible hack jobs over the years.
