If you shop around a lot, you'll get a drivable car, maybe even a very drivable car, probably with 150K+ miles. In most cases this will be an '86 or older. In almost every case, the A/C won't work, there will be some leaks here and there, and a lot of the inside trim items (oddments trays, center console, etc, will have broken plastic attachment points and incorrect/missing screws).

Keeping the car drivable (timing belts, water pumps, etc) may add up pretty quickly to another $2K - $5K in short order.

FWIW, I just did a quick search on allofcraigs.com, and found an '82 5-speed with an S3 engine for $5500. No affiliation.

that depends on what your looking for and how much you want to spend after you buy the car. Figure you will have to spend what about an equal price of whatever the asking price is in the first year to have a reliable good running car

IcemanG17 04-25-2010 10:52 PM

if you search carefully you should be able to find a "decent" OB.....or a serious project later car....but no matter what it will cost serious $$$ to bring either "up" to standards...

5K gets you a car that needs 25K worth of paint, interior, and mechanical repair.

I will have about 5k into mine right about now. Ran 15.1 w/ the highest trap speed of 96mph. The car came with headers and duel exhaust and turbo twist rims w/ new tires! Euro cam's, TB and WP are being installed now and that is included in my 5k. Daily driven, runs great. I would take it anywhere!

I quess I got lucky!

Stephen

If you luck out with a barn find, or can wrench, paint, and sew leather yourself.:o

If you look hard enough you should be able to find an early 32-valve that is in pretty good/reliable shape. It won't be perfect, but would you expect a 25 year old car to be? Some of these guys have seen so many basket-case 928's that they have a slightly skewed perspective.

Stephen,

Your car looks GREAT and because YOU have done so much of the work yourself you have created your own luck on that one! I think a car that looks better than presentable and running well (but maybe not GREAT) and with minimal issues and not NEEDING a paint job and interior right away (or maybe at all) but maybe needs a TB and A/C work...you cant really find that car for less than $6k unless you really do get lucky...

Oh, one correction Stephen, those are BOXSTER wheels, NOT Turbo Twists...

Dean_Fuller 04-25-2010 11:27 PM

Is it me or does it look like prices have gone UP over the last couple of years? S4's are getting very high. If shopping for "most fun" car for the $$$ I would guess 80 to 84....Auto's would get you a nicer car for the $$$ as well.

Just my 928 cents worth.

I saw a great $5K 86.5 on Ebay in February. Would have been worth it; would probably need Timing Belt & Water Pump in a few months...

I use Craiglook.com for my Craigslist searches.

pcar928fan 04-25-2010 11:39 PM

If you didn't see it in person then it is suspect! Pics on ebay/CL, etc and be so bad that the car can actually look fine but be in need of a complete repaint and new interior! Not to mention if you didn't drive it WHO KNOWS what else could be wrong!

jcb928 04-25-2010 11:46 PM

You will need to search around and low ball a couple of people but you can find a ok 928 at that price.
