You can get older cars that have been kept in good condition and maintained for $5K.
5 years ago, I purchased my 81 and drove the car for 30K miles without major repairs being needed.
Sure it needed tires, brake pads, some HVAC work (vaccum actuator), vacuum lines and the normal maintenance (filters, plugs etc).
The PO had done alot of maintenance and had records to show it. I think this is the key. If there are records as proof of maintenance, then you can find a good deal for reasonable.
That is the guidance I was given before I purchased. Does it have records to show maintenance. If not - walk away!
If it does, ask to see them and ask alot of questions. Then start bargaining.

When you start to worry is when you find the $50 special with no records!
