Default 1977 serial number 28

For sale here in Norway:

Probably not interesting for many of you guys in the US, but stil fun to se one of the earliest produced 928's. Claims it's serial number 28, produced in february 1977, with odd details like no side indicators, and window buttons from a 911.

Looks like bits and pieces. Steering wheel looks like 4 post, rear spoiler, and why not pictures of any type of ID item, vin stamp, motor ID, plate up by the bumper, etc. Not sure date on the wheel means much.

how much is that in US dollars?
seats/door panel inserts have been replaced, added center of S spoiler but not sides?
no side markers at all would be consistent w/ real early vins

USD 16,730... Now if this Vin is correct then its worth buying and saving. I am sure one can find an early 928 to do an interior swap thus keeping it original. Personally If I had the cash to throw around I would buy it ship it here and restore it, but then again there is that nice silver one with 14K miles that I would buy first!

Feb of '77....that seems MIGHTY early for a '78 model 928 and to my knowledge there were no '77 model year cars sold... You always read "introduced in '77 as a '78 MY car..."

That low of a production number (again if it is authentic) *MIGHT* be one of the Pre-production models... Didn't (doesn't) the factory usually have the first 25-50 serial numbers as pre-pro models???

Normally, Porsche used 0-25 as pre-production. My best friend Joe from Germany has got such car with the VIN #20. Porsche used her as pace-car at Le Mans in 1977 (June 10th). Sadly, in between it's been resprayed in different colour and fitted with the side-indicators, but he's restoring it now to factory specs. But the genuine number-plate is still with her

WOW! Now that is COOL!

I looked at the pics and that rear spoiler is something that you see pics of in Project 928, but I have never seen pics of "production" cars w/ that spoiler... this is a very interesting car. Does not look to have the rear fog lights...that is kind of strange for a Euro car...

IIRC vin's up to 46 were pre production and theoretically at least weren't supposed to get sold by the factory.

The lack of foglights - memory hazy on this - it would have been about 1977 that rear foglights first appeared on Euro cars generally.

Early MY did not use 0061 as first "normal" VIN. '79-81 started from 0011 and '82 MY from 0051. Not sure if '78 started from 0011 or 0001. In any case '78 MY production started already very early in 1977. February 1978 is very likely correct for ROW 0028. 0028 has been talked before:

US 0016 was done in 08/77. At that time VIN in ROW cars was probably around 0400-0500.

It's the same car. Both named Michael, an both have "18 marz 1977" stamped under the seats. And both have the absurd green/black combo.

Then it was not a new found after all

Here's a google-translation of the ad (just fixed the obvious errors):
Porsche 928 Prototype
A very early 928 from February 1977
It is No. 28 in the production number
Not many remains of the oldest
The first 50 is supposed to be production prototypes that were sold to selected customers. This is one of them and has some particular details that are very unusual. Can name electric window switches that are from an old 911 and no side turn signals.
The car is technically good and original engine was overhauled by the previous owner.
It is good condition despite its years. The car is repainted in original color (Porsche paint) and look good. There is small things that can be improved by some rubber, etc. Interior is very "quirky" 70s and green with black leather chairs.
Interior is good condition with original patina, but a nice modern interior may follow.
The car now have a 928S rear spoiler, but it can be removed if desired so that it becomes as it was in the 70's.
It comes with telephone wheels with contemporary Michelin tires.
On the bottom of the chairs are stamped 18 Martz 1977
This is a very old words, 928, and a good investment, and can be driven.
It is now Norwegian-registered ..
Please contact us if you want a very cool and unique vintage Porsche.

it is correct that the first 60 cars in general are declared as pre-production, but the cars after no #25 are closer to later serials, because they are mainly made under the same circumstances and on the production line under use of the most supplier-parts.

For example on Joes pace car, the instrument-cluster and the clocks are different than from the serial cars.

Porsche officially never sell pre-production cars. However, from time to time one could be found

AFAIK PET does not know any details at all for earlier '80-95 VIN's than those I listed. Meaning Porsche own system doesn't identify 0001-0010 cars at all for '80-81 and 0001-0050 for '82 MY. Its likely they weren't made at all.
