neutral/park safety start switch
I've jumpered so I can start the car so now I need to adjust the switch. How? It doesn't look like it can be. It's a 1988s4..(It would be helpful to have a pic. to look at.) THanks Doug

Merlin, I couldn't start the car ,so after extensive searching for advice I followed wally's advice to jumper the connection in the spare tire well . It started right up . Now I would like to make the switch work. I don't see any way to adjust it or any signs of a bad wire or connection.I had just finnished up a intake refresh and went to start the car and .... nothing. As far as the WSM, I downloaded a manual on a PDF format but it looks like it might not be my year of car. The switch at the trans is different than what I see ON my '88.

In Volume III of the manual, look at Page 37-109 for switch adjustment, Page 37-107 for replacement.
If the starter did not operate at any point as you held the switch in the start position and moved the shift lever thru its full range of motion, adjustment probably won't help you. It is more likely that you have a broken wire, bad connection, or faulty switch.
I would start by pulling the plug from the switch and checking continuity on the switch pins. There should be continuity between two pins with the shift lever in Park. If so, the problem is the cable between the switch and the connection in the spare tire well.

I just plugged the harness back together and it worked. I guess it could hae giggled loose. Don't know how. I wasn't even back there to have pulled loose. This car , although, hasn't been driven in 6 years until I got in January. Gremlins . Again I want to thank you all for your help. Thanks Doug.
