Don,

Maybe we can get one of our 928 friends to follow the trucks leaving the plant and see where they go!

In theory you don't lose much oil with a seal job, but maybe you did. Yes, adding oil (an ounce or two) may quiet it down, but a noisy compressor may be ready to fail and the failure could create quite a mess. Happened to me.

If you are considering a 134a conversion, you might look at one of these: http://www.apairinc.com/detail.asp?Part=503-100

New. Same footprint as a 6E171, but designed for 134a.

However, I think this compressor comes pre-loaded with PAG oil, which means, at the least, that the rest of the system would have to be REALLY thoroughly flushed and the drier changed (again?). (PAG oil is not at all compatible with any remnants of R12). If, on the other hand, this compressor is only meant for PAG oil, but not charged with it, you could use polyol ester instead, which is much more tolerant of R12 residues.

Hi SQLGuy,

No conversion for me, I am sticking with R-12, as designed, to save money.

Basically, on R-12 the system works fine, just have to work my way through the gambit of leaks (done) and now the compressor.

Hi Everyone,

TechChoice Parts Rebuilt Compressor:

I called and talked with the people at TechChoice Parts and there is no core charge with the rebuilt Denso 6E171 compressor. At $224 and no core charge, its a pretty sweet deal.

Plus it comes with a 1 year standard warrentee and they offer a life-time warentee for an addition $25.

When I talked to the guy there on the phone, he asked me what was happening. After he heard my story, he said it could be one of two things:

1) The OEM compressor in my '88 was starting to go bad and needs to be replaced.
2) Because of the recent recharge, there could be "oil on top of the pistons" (his words) and the oil might work itself out. But he said, if the shop had a recharge machine, they could pull the freon out and recharge/re-oil the system and that might quiet down the compressor.

Interesting advice.

It turns out the Denso 6E171 compressor is used on a lot of different cars and TRACTORS. Specifically, on John Deere tractors!

VTY,
Joe

I had noticed the John deere reference last summer when I was looking into fixing my AC (will be looking at it again shortly). I don't know if it is a genuine ND compressor but I have seen new in the $250 range for the JD tractors.

I went ahead and bought an AC compressor and drier, here is the information I got from a survey of parts prices on the internet to share with you:

1) 928gt.com

Rebuilt Compressor w/clutch
928.126.010.FX

https://www.928gt.com/ps-520-43-ac-c...e-rebuilt.aspx

2) zimsautotechnik.net

Price: $399, $150 core charge

3) pelicanparts.com

New Compressor w/clutch (Denso)
928-126-010-FX-M411

http://www.pelicanparts.com/cgi-bin/...C%20Each%20%20
Price: $451, no core charge

4) a-aironline.com

Rebuilt Compressor w/clutch (NipponDenso)
NIP080443M

5) techchoiceparts.com

Rebuilt Compressor w/clutch
Denso 6E171 - Single Groove Clutch 6.0" Diameter

http://www.techchoiceparts.com/showi...0334&name=1985 - 1990 Porsche 928 944 A/C Compressor

There were a lot of prices for genuine Porsche AC compressors higher than the above, upwards and above $2,000. I bought the rebuilt AC compressor and an AC dryer from TechChoice Parts.

Lots of good info Joe but I'd beware of price shopping only on a rebuilt part. We use to use one supplier that had an unacceptable failure rate and every failure was my deemed by them to be my customers issue. Once we changed suppliers that all went away.

I got mine in 2007 from John Hancock, retired guy in TX that just rebuilds one or two models of compressor as a "hobby". I figure in TX if you screw up doing AC somebody would shoot you eventually, and he is still around. No core charge, $195 w clutch plus $20 shipping, but he only lists compressors when he has them ready to sell. When I bought mine I emailed and asked him to tell me when he listed another batch for 928's and he did.

I've already commented that the $199 eBay specials I've bought have not been terribly reliable. Also, when looking at ND 6E171 listed for other vehicles, be careful that they have the same mount ears. The one pictured in message 18 seems to only have the front ear, missing the rear one. I'm not sure that is acceptable.

I think the thing that astounded me was the wide range of prices for the same AC compressor. As far as I can tell, the same compressor is used on John Deere tractors and a number of other cars.

Rebuilds from $224 to over $600, and a new compressor for only $451. Same goes for the driers from $15 to over $100 of OEM driers.

The problem I am having as an end-user is getting soaked on parts cost. My mechanic charges premium prices for all his parts, double or triple of what they can be bought for online.

Having spent ~$10k on my car in my first 10 months of ownership, I am trying to moderate my costs.

Joe

The best is the Porsche factory rebuild and at only $475 it is a great deal and only a $200 core charge.
We supply a lot of them as they are a great deal.

Porsche is the only one that seems to utilize a second mounting ear on the top of the compressor. The 6E171 is used on a lot of things. They were extensively used by Ford and Chrysler during the 80s and early 90s. Ford called it the "FS6."

Or... you can rebuild it yourself for $30 in parts and a couple of hours of work.
