Looking for a COOL color for my son's 1980
I have been working on my son's car for the last couple weeks. Getting it ready for a full repaint. He wants to change the color. Looking for "out of the ordinary" colors. My father knows someone in the car painting business that will get all the supplies at cost for me.
Looking for candies or pearls or even something wilder but can't afford the BIG $$$ paints.
Garrett is only 24 and wants something other than stock colors.
Ideas??? Pics if you have them.
Thanks, Dean

Two colors for the 928 i've often thought about and would be very unique:
1. the light battleship grey color the original Audi TT's were offered in - you'd have to hav the right interior colors to pull that off: dark brown, black, the dark red / maroon. very clean and modern, done right it would be a terrific update. And probably not too expensive. And would really show off the lines. The darker grey the TT roadsters came in (with the baseball leather interiors) would be another good candidate and closer in style to the next suggestion:
2. Porsche Atlas Grey Metallic - this is a current porsche color, very dark, blue-grey metallic - almost slate metallic. Very cool and more sophisticated than black but has the same feel (better looking the closer you get to it). might look really cool with a pearl coat! The more popular 'Seal Grey' is dosn't have any teeth to it (as a color, in my book). Go to the dealer to look at this color on a current model - it's stunning and makes to look twice. . . . very black tie, IMHO.
3. Another color that keeps snapping into my mind is the metallic lava orange that i believe was a stock color for these in some of the OB years. Another great candy color updated for modern times. (can't remember name of the color). there've been some recent cars with something close (volvo v70's come to mind...).
I'll add some pics later if i can dig some up... - and especially if your curious. post a pic of the car and i'll paint it in photoshop for you to help you decide if that would help.

Years ago Porsche had a family color that was reserved for Porsche family members only on their personal Porsches. I recall seeing a 928 in a pearlescent color that had some lavender to it. Later I saw a 924 in the same color--again, must have been a P family thing. Expensive, though!
If you want something REALLY distinctive: Sunset Pearl

What's the interior color combo? That's gotta be part of the consideration.

I would either go Light Green metallic with no rub strips and teledials a la Kermit for the ulmate period 70s cool look, or I would go a solid lairy green. The 78 was actually offered in a solid light "apple green" but I have never seen this either in a photo or real life. Would look very cool.
Personally I would stay away from yellow on the '28.
Another option that looks great on the early cars is metallic brown.
Joel
PS: what a cool position to be in, choosing the colour of a 928.

I'm a big fan of gray tones. I saw a Vette ZR1 at the Chicago auto show finished in Cyber Gray Metallic and it is a very cool color. Somewhat close to Meteor Metallic but with blue flakes.

Also the Chromaflair colors they are using on the Cadillacs are cool but no doubt expensive and then probably hard to match for repairs

I like that sunset pearl! Reminds me of Dr Nick's old orange car. Porsche never did an orange 928 - so it will get a lot of attention. I think orange with black accents would look AWESOME!
