Smile Hood latch spring access

Having successfully replaced a broken Y-Connector with the lovely stainless number, my new challenge to appear is:

My bonnet/hood doesn't stay down! Cable is fine, moved happily. Latch mechanism moves across easily (now that it is lubbed up) but the spring has broken or disconnected so there is nothing to hold the latch in place when hood is shut. Dang!

So, what's the best way to access the latch to locate or replace the spring?

Thanks in advanced...

Dan

Hi Dan,

You really need to drill out the 4 rivets attaching the lower latch mechanism, then fit new rivets after you've fixed the spring.

This is the disgracefully rusty mechanism on my last 928, where you can see the drilled out holes. The rust made the cable so tight that it snapped at the handle, so I fitted new cable, and new upper and lower latch mechanisms.

btw what technique did you use to lubricate the mechanism - wiggle your finger under there or spray something?

Lubricated it with just WD40 and finger power to get it moving freely. It was only then did I realise there was no spring, after searching the forums to see how it worked of course.

Better go buy a rivet gun then!

Talking Sorted!

So, drill out the rivets, and the lock falls away. Check down with torch to see if spring had fallen down, and find the spring, broken at one end.
Bend spring end to create a temporary loop (its not going to last long with that rusty spring) and after buying a rivet gun from B&Q, fit it back with a lucky guess of 5mm by 3mm rivets.

DONE!

Need to buy a replacement latch but I can now drive at least.

And I thought my old latch was rusty <g>.

Nice fix Dan and good guess on the rivets - the actual Porsche ones (999 190 128 30) are 4.8mm.
