Very happy with my two year old 928 Int'l RMB, fwiw. Turns heads, but not a cop/neighbor magnet.

I know for certain that an RMB will increase the sound.
Here are two potential solutions for x-pipe and cats. As you note, they are for aftermarket cats and the location isn't exactly stock, but still thought this might be relevant even when trying to fit stock cats:

http://www.performance928.com/cgi-bi...ss_parent=1128

Option 1: "Complete exhaust system. Ott pipe in front. Random Technology SuperStainless high flow cats, P/N 702500. Random Technology does not have a picture of the 702500 cat on their web site, but their 8100 series universal cat is the same size."

Option 2: "Here is another option with headers on a 6.5L motor. The exhaust is 3" diameter stainless. After the header collectors, are two 4" diameter 16" long mufflers followed by an X section crossover. The 4" diameter mufflers in front of the crossover could be exchanged for cats."

I think Louis Ott's car is the highest hp/liter (and probably also the highest BMEP at peak power) 928 engine out there, so these must be "right."

Here are the pics of the 3 different RMB's I've got on hand.

Left is something someone made up, it fits and works well.

Middle one, no idea who made it.

Right is an SLC's I think, it's what Roger sells and I think is the best built one.

Plan on selling the left and middle ones. Keeping the right one.

Turbines reduce noise all their own, I guess like you said, because they garble the pulses. I know a lot of factory turbo cars don't use mufflers because the turbine already breaks up the noise enough to get by.

I would tend to agree, but with the X, small resonators on my car, the only way to get a decent sound, that didn't kill my head was to install a GTS muffler on it.

With the sport cats it still needed the GTS muffler to quiet it down?

Yup, mine was obnoxious, you've heard it. I had planned on putting the larger resonators on (have a set) but really liked the way another car sounded with the GT muffler on it. So went that route instead.

That's interesting. Mine is loud, but it's not really THAT loud.

I put the 928 intl one on my 89S4 and its great. Just had a guy in a 911 stop me at the wash garage who thought I had converted my 928 to a Chevy v8 based on the sound. He runs out to stop me from driving away just because of the rumble. It is just mean enough and drivable. to me anything more noisy would get old fast.
