How practical can a 928 be for dd use?

Practical? 928?
Can it be used as a DD, yes. Is it reliable, yes. Will it put a big smile on your face every day, yes.
Practical, no. The 928 is not really a 4 seater and dropping the kids off every day would be more practical with a 4 door.

I commuted on an off in 928s for 12 years now, I have to say they are hard core cruisin machines. The longer you have to drive the better. When people ask how I can handle a 50 minute commute through twisty wooded roads, I just point them to the parking lot, never need to say anything else.
Problems, about 2002 my 86.5 had a heater line blow off the top of the block, had to get towed.
in 2008 my 87 s4's computer went, but it did give me warning, and it finally died a mile from my house.
I think any other 20+ year old car could not beat 928s as a daily.

I have used my 81 for DD for 5 years. The 84 just got a trans R&R and is now the DD while the 81 gets an upgrade to 4.7L.
My commute is 8 miles (one way), but I find I go the long way (14 miles) just to have more time behind the wheel.
Everyone wonders why I come into work with a smile on my face.
Cheers,

You will be fine ! My wife droive 3 miles to work in her 1979 for years I change oil more often because of the "whipped cream" build up under the oil fill cap ...but the car was fine. The occasional long trip like to Vegas seemed to suit it well. My old very brown 1980 was my go to work car for years until I started tracking it and things started to fall off

I drive mine back and forth to work every day with very rare problems. If you have a long freeway commute, this car is perfect, because it was built for the Autobahn. If you have a lot of stop-n-go traffic, the 928 is not so good. As soon as you get the car moving you have to hit the brakes.

A little more background on my situation:
This would be car number 5, so not my only transportation.
I have tools and have spun them on the 911 often (I would think the 928 is easier to get to the motor then the flat 6 in the back, ha!).
I've restored a couple of muscle cars and an old truck, so working on cars and high maintenance is nothing new.
My current commute is only 3 miles each way (plus a half mile to the gym at lunch).
I'm looking to use this to replace my current dd which is a '95 Saturn 4-door, 4-cylinder, AT, boring to drive car, HA!

The BEST advice ever regarding 928's is find the BEST example you can afford....it is FAR cheaper to buy an excellent well sorted 928 than a "cheap" car with issues.....don't be afraid of high mileage, if there is documentation to prove its been well cared for..... I would take a well cared for high mileage 928 over a mid mileage "unknown" 928 anyday!!!!

Too funny, thanks Brian. I was also looking at a "cheap" ($2,500) high mileage (175k) '82 with very sketchy history, etc. I thought for the price, I could easily dump a few thousand into it and be money ahead. May have to re-think that one???
Now, if I could only get these damn people on Craigslist to call me back, ha!

Go for it! Once I had mine sorted in the "How Much Will He Spend" reality-TV blockbuster, it seemed like a sin not to drive it. After winter freshening in 2008, I drove it 104 days in a row, everything from errands to hauling mulch to trips to Duluth to the ride to work. After the even-more-extensive 2009 campaign, I drove all the way into December but with fewer consecutive days. 928s love miles and don't imagine what a fine car it is, go and experience it.

I bought my 928 sight unseen and drove it home 1950 miles in 2 days. It has been a daily driver for almost 6 months now (100k on it). no problems. Only time I don't drive it is if the salt trucks have been out in the snow. That's what the 200k mile Ford Explorer is. Gonna drive it 1000 miles to Atlanta for a wedding and not even giving it a second thought.

I lived in Truckee for several years, and my 79 928 was my only vehicle. Put some Pirelli winter tires on it, never chained up, and only got stuck in the driveway once due to snow and ice. Drove thru some nasty winter storms up there, and passed many other sports cars that were in the snowbank. Get it running right, and it will be a fine DD.
