My GT was a DD for the first 4.5 years I had it, then was our date car, fun car for another 4.5 years and now back to DD for almost the last year. No better way to commute! As others have said, 928's like to be driven. Maintenance for a DD is pretty normal once everything is brought up to date, remembering that these are still 20+/- year old cars and there are things that wear out after that long...

This would be my only concern, 3 miles isn't enough to get the engine properly warmed up. So depending on climate, condensation might be an issue.

My suggestion is to find another job 20-30 miles from home, preferably via some twisty roads, or maybe scout out some back roads to work.

Rick,
Amen to that brother! I couldn't agree more! They are old cars...I think they do better than most cars of their age too! Hell, most cars the age of our 928's are in the wrecking yards! That is why these muscle cars of the 60's and 70's are so valuable today...they were NOT made to last! The 928 was made to last like NO OTHER Porsche and maybe no other car!

Seriously, think about the kinds of things that have to be done to these cars 30 years or more on since they were introduced... They have lasted AMAZINGLY well! The 911's that came before the 928 will rust away on you and the later ones (thinking 996 and forward here...I think the 964 and 993 are pretty solid) were not built to last. Engine failures and other things like that are not uncommon at all. If a 928 was well kept up and was not a known electrical gremlin car from day one then I suspect you will find few cars that can equal it in reliability and even fewer that will put as big a smile on your face when you use it as a DD!

Hi and welcome. Glad to finally see someone else from Carson here. If you would like to compare the auto to the manual we can take out my 84' auto for a spin. It has been sitting far to long this winter and needs to get out for some air!

Yes, this is one of the boundary conditions. With an 80's engineered car, a good situation would be a reasonable commute (less than an hour), without a great deal of traffic. Avoid short trips. Anticipate some normal maintenance related to usage, but this kind of driving will avoid strange failures, associated with disuse and dry rot.

A 928 is just like a woman.Take care of her and "maintain" her properly and she will love you long time and with minimal problems, mistreat and neglect her and she will leave you stranded and lonely.

You're going to miss your cupholder. Better stick with the Saturn

After getting my 911. I can tell you the 928 is made to drive, (where the 911 is made to go around a track) If you find the right one, keep it up and take care of it, It will take care of you in style and comfort.

If you get the wrong one and neglect it, you will be back here in a year trying to tell everyone how our cars suck.

I drove my 84 for about 10 years before I started beating it on the track regularly. It never disapointed. I had a green wire problem, and that was about it. Its all about driving it right and maintenance.

+1, I drive mine everyday for the past 3+ years and my commute used to be too short. I now use a train station slightly farther away and it's still only about a 15 minute drive, but hopefully enough for the engine oil to heat up completely.

I've had a few issues with my '85 5-speed but it was in really bad shape with 203k miles when I got it. Now it's down for the shift centering spring in the trans because I've got an injury and can't drive OR fix it. But all in all, a very reliable car and the most fun car to drive and work on that I've ever had.

Yes, I would love to take you up on it (PM me if you want). I've been on the 996 side for a while but don't venture out much, ha!

As other have said the 3 mile commute is an issue - y0u may anyway find yourself taking the long way...

I have used my GTS as a DD for the last 10 years - reliable, fun and a discussion topic at work. I don't think I've had many more maintenance issus to deal with that I would have anyway... cost a lot more in tires, gas and oil - but worth it for the smiles... these cars like to be driven - YMMV!

Thanks again for all the input ..... again. At this point, I'm mainly interested in the ride quality and creature comforts compared to my 996 and say an older 5 series??? I am concerned too about my short commute (but it is nice being only 5 minutes from work!)???

So long as the maintenance is kept up to date, a 928 makes a great DD. When I bought mine, I drove it 1600 miles home, put in about $2200 in fixes to get it into top shape(parts & labor), and I've been driving it about 3 days a week, about 30 miles each way, plus a few trips of 200 miles plus.
