Default 84 L-jet died while running

Hi,
My very reliable, year around, car died tonight. It cranked great but would not re-start easily. I smelled gas in exhaust. I finally got it started by flooring the gas and cranking. I assume somehow it got flooded and this helped clear the cylinders. It continued to run roughly on the way home and died again. It restarted same way. I could smell a very hot catalytic converter or muffler. Most ignition components (plugs, wires, coil dist cap and rotor)1-3 years old. Alarm system bypassed. Jumpered Fuel injection relay without difference.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance and once again my car was thoughtful enough to get me home.
Dave

first thought, bad fuel damper or regulator diaphragm. When they go it will cause it to run extremely rich.

Thanks. I assume that if I pull the vacuum line to either and smell gas, I know my problem. I will look this weekend.

AFM? 944 did the same thing on me a while back and I had to replace it. L-Jet symptoms between the 2 cars are pretty much the same I think.

Dave,
I have a spare AFM in the garage. We could try it, see if it helps. I assume all L-Jet AFM's are the same. Mine spare was working fine on my 82 when I pulled it.

same in apearance, but not the same. different voltages. 5 volt for 944, 9volt max position for the 928.

I think he meant in overall set-up. Also, I believe the early 944's are 9v but they are definitely not 5.

You are correct, but I was talking about the symptoms.

Also a great recommendation I want to put out to Kenzie is to buy the book "How to Tune And Modify Bosch Fuel Injection." I cannot tell you how many times I read that book and used its information combined with Rennilst to solve my L-Jet problems in the past!

Andy, I will have to check that book out.

If it has never been done, you should also re-track your AFM wiper arm. Generally, no need to buy a new one. Instructions to do so can be found on Clark's Garage: http://www.clarks-garage.com/index.htm goto garage shop manual, goto air flow sensor.

I ran some Techron through the gas and it has not misbehaved again since. Not a great feeling but I simply could not duplicate the failure no matter what I did. So far, so good.

temp II sender......when the Lemons racer died if we "jumped" it with a simple wire...the car ran....pulled the wire....IT DIED & would not restart..... When the temp II is dead it tells the L jet brain to massively over fuel causing it to die or not start...
