Default MB Quart Speaker Questions Maybe a whole new system

MB Quart Speaker Questions

Please help with a few questions.

Can someone tell me if the MB Quart PVF 210 Speaker System was manufactured in Germany.

Were any of the PVF's made in China ?

I believe that the company that made these was purchased and the current PVI system is made in China.

Has anyone also used the PVF's and replaced them with something else that sounded better ?

Are these speakers good enough that there is no need to search for better ?

Thank you in advance.

PVI 210's are too deep for the doors. Are the PVF's shallower?

I got fed up trying to find the right MBQ models and dealing with online sellers that listed models they didn't have, so I bought the Diamond Audios. Been very happy with them.

I've used Diamond and higher-end JL components in the past... very happy with both.

Thank you for your input.

I posted the following in another thread and I am moving it here to provide some background as to my situation.

Someone stripped out the factory system from my 91 and installed a Blaupunkt Lexington CM84. They took the amp, crossovers and tweeters. They replaced the 4" speakers with a Model 4 China speaker which now need repair. Of course they messed up the factory wiring. I have not looked at what they did to the 6" ones.

Now I am in the market for almost or an entire new system. The first hurdle is find things that fit. Most of the threads here are outdated because the products seem to be now discontinued.

The MB Quart PVF 210 has been replaced with the PVI 210 which appears now to exceed the space allowed for installation.

At this point the only door and maybe rear woofer and tweeter with crossovers seems to be a MTX Audio TX4001. Anyone have experience with these ?

Yes, the PVF's are not as deep as the PVI's. I was considering PVI's with a depth extender ring. I reconsidered when I found that they are made in China.

I also considered the Diamonds, Audiobahn ABC4002Q and the China made MTX Audio TX4001.

All of this searching for speakers to fit the old 4" shallow technology is very limiting. Additionally, I think that the constraint of keeping the factory look is the problem.

My wife's Corvette has a Bose system and the sound is fantastic. If I were buying a new car I would not hesitate to include that option. Problem is that Bose will not sell components.

Given that my car has been stripped, I believe that I need to start over.

I have concluded that to be free to make a great instead of adequate system I need to scrap the 4" speaker concept and use 5.25" speakers with 1" depth extender rings.

The "factory" look will be gone but not overly different. This may be heresy to a purist but heaven to someone who appreciates great sound.

What is the consensus on this change ?

I was able to install 4" Kenwood co-axial speakers (Model: KFC-1062S from Best Buy) in place of the 4" midrange in my '88 S4, they fit fine and are not too deep.

I simply disconnected the OEM tweeters and used the existing wiring to connect to the co-axial Kenwood speakers. Everything works just fine and they sound great.

They sound much better than the 22 year old OEM speakers.

I just installed Infinity Kappa 4" coaxial speakers in the doors & 6.5" in the rear. They fit nicely in the stock grills. I am very happy with sound.

Another plus for the Diamond 4" components is that the grill that the larger speaker comes with is a close match for the stock grill, so you don't have to worry about that 20+ year old ring breaking like they often do. The tweeters can be mounted behind the stock grill but it takes some modifications, not too hard though. They are also VERY affordable.

You can get great sound with 4" components as long as you add an amp and a sub.

As I remember, speakers with a depth of 1.75" just touch the metal plate inside the door, so around 1.6 - 1.7" is probably about right.

The Diamond Audio D343's are listed as having a mounting depth of 1.8" but they work.

Not much depth unless you want to cut into the doors.

New Stereo System

I didn't have the money to do this now but the ZR 525 CSi's will soon be unavailable except for the newer models.

I have decided to purchase the following parts to replace my system:

2 pairs - JL Audio ZR 525 CSi Component 5.25" Woofers and 1" Tweeters with crossovers.

2 each - Kicker CVT654 (10CVT654) 6.5" Subwoofers

1 each - JL Audio XD600/6 6-channel Class D System 600W Amplifier

3 - Pairs American International SG-600 DX 1" Extenders

Some modifications will be required to make these items fit:

The 5.25" speaker will require both an extender and the hole increased from 3.75" to 4.5".

The Kicker speakers will fit in the stock hole with the depth extender.

The amplifier is a new more compact model 8-9/16"W X 2-1/16"H X 7-1/8"D and I hope will fit under the right front seat.

After searching for speakers that would fit the 4" shallow depth stock holes and finding few if any real options I decided to go for the larger speakers. This system is not cheap and I hope that it will sound excellent.

I have searched Rennlist and discovered a great step by step door removal thread.

I was unable to find any rear panel removal advice. Any help with this would be appreciated ?

Thanks

James
