Looking for tips for installing upper window seal/channel
I'm attempting to replace the window seal/channel on the drivers side door on my 84'. I have the seal in place but I can't get the the small round "bead" portion of the seal to fit into the recess on the door. I have lubed it up and let the rubber get nice and warm in the sun but still can not get it to go. Seems like it should just pop into place. What to do next?

I remove the inner door panel then the inner window seal then felt window guides, then use some silicone grease on the edges of the seal dont get any on the felt portion or the window will get marks on it every time the window goes up.
This is a tough job but with some patience the seal will go in.
start at the rear of the door so the curve is perfectly fitted

ditto to the above, but try using a blunt flat screwdriver under the outside lip, push down firmly with that while with the other hand in the gap where the felts are push the seal towards the outside of the door. It took me hours of sore hands to work that out then it seemed to go pretty fast. I suggest you mask off the black strip on the ouside so if you slip (ask me how I know) you don't take any paint off.

Don't know if this will help, but there's a great TV show called Wheeler Dealers...and the mechanic - Ed China - has a great way of installing the rear quarter glass using para cord. Worth a look...the same technique might apply.

Hope it helps

I'm doing the window seal that goes around the window frame opening that the glass rolls up into. I'm confused as to why the door panel and felt guides would need to come off.

Last one I put in took me hours of poking in about 1/8" at a time with a blunt poking thing, and as I recall the last inch or so was almost hopeless. I also recall something about rolling the bead into the channel from one side, but fortunately most of my memory is gone, blotted out to keep me sane.
I wonder if some kind of special tool doesn't exist for doing this?

Snakefeeder - Thanks for posting that! I watch Wheeler Dealers everytime I stumble across it, but I've never seen that episode. "telee-dials" and everything I don't know how they would've put that seal in at the factory, but I can't imagine Hans putsing arouund with a screwdriver pushing it in 1/8th inch at a time. Just another question I'll have to ask St Peter someday...

regarding the seal you are replacing, there could be some confusion, i thought you were replacing what i call the 'swiper' It sits outside and stops water running off the window and into the inside of the door. If it is that one, removing the felts etc gives you some play in the window glass that lets you get a hand/finger into the window cavity and so makes the install easier. If its not that seal, then forget everything I posted!

Ok, I have not done that one (sorry to see the damage by the way) but I think the technique will be similar, get the body of the seal into the slot and then use a plastic screwdriver like fraggle suggested to press the bead into the groove. If that does not work, let me know what does as I may need to know one day...

Thread revival - I am doing this job for the driver's side window - replacing seal part #15 from the pic below.
My question is, does the outsdie window trim need to come off too? I hope not - mine is original, and if I break anything, I will never be able to replace it with the same stuff (it's a black trim, unlike on later years). Does anyone know?
