Greg just gave the one true answer. It is the same effect that breaks the small belt within the double distributor of the 964. Aftermarket ventilation setups cures that problem.

I always thought that the vents in the cam belt covers were a means of venting the pressurized air created by the ignition rotor, which at high speed acts as a sort of supercharger.
Instead of venting to atmosphere, Porsche in their infinite wisdom say that by venting it into air intake tube, it created an extra 4 psi of lets call it boost and when tested against an early mule without the vent going into the intake tubes, they found another 47.5- 48.5 HP (The exact number isnt known however, but its somewhere in between the 2.
