9225-1 valve stem seal driver. These come in 2 flavors, 1 with a central pin on which the stem seal mounts, and one that lacks the pin. If you’re going to buy one, get the one with the pin in it.

Aftermarket copy of the factory 9161/1 flywheel lock tool. If I read the guide correctly, 9161 is 78-82 (early bellhousing with a different rotation of the clutch slave cylinder), and then the 9161/1 is for 83- and up.

9226 cam removal tool for ’85/’86 cars. This comes as a 6-piece set – two removal blocks, two cam aligning tools, and a pair of the threaded rods for mounting in the spark plug holes. .

9248 cam removal blocks for ’87-95 cars. The 9248’s have larger holes drilled in them, which fit over the sleeves surrounding the cam tower bolts. Annoyingly these come as single blocks., so to actually use these you need to buy two 9248’s and the 9226 set in order to have the threaded rods.

9165 hub cap dust tool. Works on front hub dust caps (911 341 684 00) from ’78-91. For some reason the GTS switched to 928 341 684 00, which has no detent on it, so the tool doesn’t work.

Wow.

The "bent nail" for the end of the dial gauge was *6 weeks* from germany, but was 7 dollars. I made a copy of it with some stainless steel drill rod, a very hard to find 3/48 thread die, and some trial and error.

But it worked.

I also did not find the actual dial gauge holder you have pictured when I needed it, so I made an aluminum strip to put the regular base/holder onto the head.

Interesting that you mention the valve spring compressor that fits on the heads - I think I have the porsche one. Or at least parts of it, with two different heads - one nylon head with magnets to attract the keepers, and one head (which I need to fix) that is supposed to be able to put the keepers back.

Also, I think 928intl sells a flywheel lock now that works with both permutations. Its easier to have one when you have different year cars, or Frankensteins like I do.

Brendan-

That valve spring compressor is mentioned on 15-112 in WSM volume 1 as being an 'assembly bridge' by Sauer Hamburg. Where in the heck would you have found that? I think it's the PNA 721 022 tool.

I got my flywheel lock from Carl, I think it's the hybrid model that works for all years.

Here's a few others.

Unbelievable list!

I thought I had an ok tool collection but now feel very inadequate.

From entire list I only have the Bosch 2-pin remover, oh and the JDS version of the diagnostic tool.

I've always coveted the pin wrench for the fuel sender nut!

Will never be short of things to put on Xmas list now. Thanks for researching all this and posting the excel file too.

Mark-

Cool, so those are 9131 (The 'original' Kempf tool), 9157 (oil pump pulley holder), and if I'm not mistaken, 9130 (the flywheel holder? I've wondered whether one could use that to mount a dial gauge when doing crank endplay measurements...)

I took some pics because you piqued my interest. It may not be one in the same:

I should get those seal pushers. I am always needing something like that when I don't have time to order it.

Rob Edwards 03-22-2010 02:09 PM

Wow, that looks like PNA 721 022. The last price I saw for that set was $600. (dunno if it's even still available)

Forgot one tool, though it's nothing like the factory 9237 puller. The Schley products 92350 valve stem seal pliers. Worked great for me on 2 sets of heads:

Wow, great collection Rob. After the last couple years, I can definitely see the value in each of those tools.

RyanPerrella 03-22-2010 03:10 PM

Notice the difference in the way Mark's tools look and Rob's?

Rob this is some collection you have. I trust you've given up on the idea of switching over to a Ferrari 348

Great thread, Im also curious about the valve spring compressor that works without the bar across the top of the head. Rob, can you take a picture of this in use, or staged so i can see what it grabs onto for leverage? I cant make it out in my head

Brendan, how is your valve spring compressor?

One thing that I don't like with the one Rob has pictured (the one with the bar) is that the tool doesn't fit and seat onto the spring retainer. But Brendan's looks like its got a much larger base and is likely much more stable. I like that one of them is nylon too, that helps when using a magnet to remove or install the keepers.

Rob Edwards 03-22-2010 03:18 PM

Ryan-

Here's the 9242 in use:

The magnet part works great. The installation tool is much more clunky, and its broken, and I have not fixed it. It uses a rubber band to allow you to do this one handed. I have not tried it.

The issue with these tools is that you really have to situate the head so it won't tilt over when you put pressure down. The plastic pads that came with it really don'ty provide confidence.

You're probably pushing down with about 150-200 lbs of force to compress the spring assembly enough to fish the keepers out. Note the bar clamp at the far end holding the head to the workbench:
