Default Is there a rheostat for the dash lights?

I installed a radio, now no dash lights, is there an adjustment for brightness?

Thumbwheel under dash, left side, kind of set on an angle.
Right side also has one, its for frequency of intermittent wipers.

Yes.

It's on the horizontal surface under the dash pod - the surface that faces your knees. A knurled wheel .

It is I think on a LHD car on the same side as the headlight/indicator stalk. There is another similar rheostat wheel on the other side (under the wiper stalk ) that adjusts the intermitttent wiper frequency.

Most hopeful scenario is that in the gymnastics involved in fitting the radio you just inadvertantly dialled back the brightness with a knee or misplaced elbow/**** etc.

Fred if you can get your hands on an owners manual it will detail all of the switches on the pod

This is a good point, the contacts on the controls can eventually corrode and cause a poor contact and intermittent light or no light. I noticed this on my S4 as well.

Moving the wheel slowly every 6 months should help keep it clean.

Now that you've discovered it, reach in and disconnect the two wires that go to it. Make a small jumper. Attach the two ends together. Enjoy brighter dash lighting.

This will make the dash brighter than the max setting on the dimmer?

No, its the same as running the thumbwheel all the way to maximum, where the rheostat is shorted out - as in bypassed.

At least on my 89 S4, the rheostat still dims the lights from full brightness even at its lowest resistance position.

The dash lights are brightest when the lights are off, during daylight - turning on the lights includes the rheostat in the circuit and the dash gets a little dimmer. Bypassing it should mean that with lights on, the dash is as bright as it is with lights off.

Mark, You might just get a test light and check for juice before you rip it apart, but that thing was the source of my problem, and I believe many others as well.
