Those are nice pictures! The two cars couldn't be more different in character and looks.
A few comments about your girlfriend's beautiful S4:
1. In the engine compartment, the cover over the jump post is missing. This could allow water to drip onto the contacts and cause more than normal corrosion, leading to electrical problems down the road. It's a $15 or so part - no reason not to get a replacement. You can get this from your favorite 928 parts supplier.
2. I'm curious what is the wire that is connected to one of the fender bolts? I've never seen that before.
3. I assume you took the air intake tubes off for the photo shoot. You should always have them on; otherwise the engine will suck hot air from the engine compartment into the intake and reduce power.
4. There seems to be a K&N filter installed. There have been many discussions about this on an S4. We know it allows more air, but also more dirt to pass through. The the oil on the K&N is suspected to cause trouble with the MAF, as more of its oil settles on the sensor wire over time. Since the standard air filter has never been the bottleneck in the 928 intake, most owners stay away from the K&N nowadays.
5. That rear spoiler is at a pretty steep angle... Is the car set-up for the track? On the road, this angle will slow it down and increase fuel consumption.
6. The trim around the rear quarter window is quite faded. That's typical for these cars. You can either replace the trim, which is a real pain to do, or you can use a trim overlay kit that's specially made for the quarter windows. It's invisible when installed, but makes the trim look like new. Cost is about $24 + shipping (see my store)
7. The hood ornament could use a bit of extra attention... OK, you knew that already.
Hope this is helpful.

Nicole, your point #4 isn't always true.
Proper maintenance of a K&N filter is key. Many over-oil, that appears to be the problem. I only oil one side of the filter (side away from MAF), and let air dry for one day before re-installing in my car. This works for me.
In the 10 years I've had a K&N filter, I have not had a K&N related MAF sensor issue. The MAF's output has been verified as being within spec.

Plastic cover that clips onto the edge of fender and is held on by plastic screw on cap over the jump post/positive power junction.
I'm guessing car is an early 87 with rub strip delete and flip up rear wing that's not locked in the down position.
As to the K&N, don't think anyone has proven that it makes any measurable extra power.
I've used it. Went back to stock paper element air filter.
Last time I was re-oiling the K&N, out of curiosity I looked up at bright light source through the K&N and could actually see through the filter. Lots of pinhole openings.
Tried same with paper element air filter, and I could not see through the paper element filter.
If you have nice pristine dust free air to drive through, the K&N will probably keep the leaves and other road debris out.

Nice cars, both.
The thing I'd be checking on the S4 would be motor mounts due to the elevation of the oil filler neck relative to the cross brace. Collapsed hydraulics mounts can be replaced with inexpensive solid ones and car be smoother..

To the left of the left air intake, (viewed from the front) in line with the oil dip stick. The connector cover and hot post cover seems to be missing in a lot of 928's. From everyone here, I've learned to look for that first when viewing engine pictures. But, I didn't notice the missing air tubes until Nicole's post. I've still got a lot to learn.

Great pictures, looks like you're enjoying the beast. Curious what your friend with the GTO thinks of the 928, any comments?
I agree with Nicole, you should tend to some of these points asap to prevent problems later on.
If you want to clean up the Porsche badge you can either use a wooden toothpick or a boars hair brush which should be available in any auto store. Soak it with a quick detailer or diluted car wash soap and gently brush it until the wax breaks loose.

The screw-on portion or jump post cover (not part of the plastic cover) helps hold the connector cover on: is also a safety item. You may not have a wrench in your hand every time you open the hood, but that is an invitation for a nice wake-up shock to your nervous system, can cause just a little drop of pee to come out.

But since these features were not mainstream, yet, they could not just go and buy them from some other manufacturer - they had to design everything from scratch and make it or have it made in the small quantities needed for these cars only.
That made these features both expensive and less reliable than they are in today's cars.
