Excellence article on Carl's Pikes Peak 928 racer
Surprised this hasn't been on here yet, at least I don't think it has, but there is a great article with pictures on Carl Fausett's (928 Motorsport) 928 Pikes Peak racer and his efforts during the races he attended in the latest edition of Excellence mag. Lots of cool insights and facts regarding the modifications done to his 928 for the races too. Congratulations Carl!
There is also another article titled "Porsches for $8,000" which focuses on mainly the hunt for a 944 but also includes a 928 for consideration too. Written by Gerry Burger who also wrote the article about my own 1986.5 racer back in the Feb. 2005 edition of Excellence.
Enjoy,

You've got to hand it to Carl. He shows up in an old car and takes 3rd on his first attempt. Total underdog!

The 3 rd was out of seven cars in his "division" two of which DNFed. The fastest car in his class was 11 minutes 52 seconds Carl did a 13.46 or one minute and 54 seconds slower. The fastest car overall had a cool 10 minute 15 second time......of 35 or so cars to attempt to go up the hill including all who DNFed His time was about 16 th fastest. Quite a good effort for a novice.

The Lemons racer has a grand total of $7500 TOTAL investment....after TWO races (including race fees)...
I think I can get the lemons racer back to "race ready" status this time for WAY less.....few hundred tops....tires and brakes are good still...so this next race will be much less $$$$

Yea, Brian, I try not to think about the per hour of track time that my car has cost! INSANE! My idea in the beginning was to get a dedicated track car out there for DE stuff (but one that was NICE and all...looked good, reliable, fun to drive) and do it for around the same bucks as I had spent on my '88 S4 (bit over $20k)... uh, YEA, that DID NOT HAPPEN! DAMN IT! One of these days I will have both MONEY and TIME at the SAME TIME and will start to really enjoy that car the way it SHOULD be enjoyed.
Here is a question for you track guys... What size SLICK racing tires are available USED that are 12" wide and have an OD (or is it circumference??? I think it is OD) of 25" or less (say 24.5" minimum)??? I have used Hoosiers and Goodyear for my 16" wheels, but some day I would like to bump up to 18" x 12" wheels but don't want to do that if I can't find good used racing slicks for the car. A good take off slick for $75 shipped is REALLY HARD TO BEAT!

the 16" wheel kinda limits things..... since most touring cars nowadays are running 18" wheels.... it seems the biggest I can find in R comps is 255/50-16 which is only 10" wide....but it is an American Iron spec tire...

Brian,
I didn't phrase that very well...
I currently have 16" wheels and PLENTY of used slick options for the 16" wheels... The question is when I move up to 17" or 18" or whatever bigger wheels what size SHOULD I choose so that I can get take off used slicks again on the cheap.
Are there more (or ANY) 17" X 12" racing slicks that are 24.5" or prefer 25.0" diameter overall or are there more 18" X 12" slicks?

Or you could look at the my 79, which is as fast as the lemons, and was FREE and only used my wheels and tires as its ONLY performance mod. maybe we should get bill ball to get that 70 out there in the lemons race! 2:10 at thunderhill on my wheels and tires problem is, the suspension was about $400 used from anderson back in the day , so that wouldnt leave much costs for the wheels and tires.

The holbert racer ran for 8 full racing seasons, with very little mods. I think the only thing I did in the 8 years that was major was a couple of water pumps ( mainly due to defects), timing belts, and brake pads. I did have that cam tooth breaking thing, but that was a $700 fix total. talk about bang for the buck! same transmission, no issues, same clutch, same suspension, only free tires (or near free) and brakepads/rotors! Not bad for a car that runs with in 8% of the GT3 cup car times with the best drivers in the world!
