Since there is no performance advantage to the K and N and it does not fit all that well it is hard to make a case for using it. I do not think the oil contamination theory is a proven fact but it has not been refuted either but the burden of proof is on those who believe that it happens. Given that mass airflow sensors degrade and fail over time reguardless of what type filter is used it is hard to KNOW what caused what. It would be interesting to spray oil filter oil on the mass air repeatedly and see what happens. I tend to think the normal burn off cycle that it does after every drive will displace the oil..... 1,800 degrees tends to make short work of petroleum based products ....exhaust gas temperature is about 1,200 degrees

Looks great! I second the idea of painting / powdercoating the thermostat housing to be the same as the intake. At the very least have it bead blasted to shiny new look. Very very nice job.

Great job!

I've had a K&N on my car for 15 years with no problems. YMMV

Mike:

I agree with what others are saying here about the K&N and have posted that before. I didn't suggest changing yours out, although I should have. You had so many other parts (every single hose, etc.) to install and jobs for me, more than I was able to finish, and that was another one I overlooked as well.

BTW, for others, Mike had the cam covers and intake powder coated in "silver vein", I believe, and it really looks sharp.

Mike - Looks GREAT! I need to do that on my GTS--planning on $1,200 - $1,500. Am I in the ballpark? Well, that plus plane tickets for Bill Ball and his daily per diem...

Or polishing. Wish I had had time to do it.

Thanks for the compliments everyone! Looks like I'll order a stock air filter and get to work on polishing the thermostat housing.

NoVector- Are you asking about the powdercoat job or the overall job? The powdercoat cost $350 and I painted the letters myself like Dwayne did. Overall the job cost about 6k in parts without labor. Keep in mind I had nearly every hose and belt under the hood replaced as well as sensors, new injectors, nology wires, new wiring harness, drilled rotors, aluminum coolant res, etc... You could probably do it a lot cheaper than I did.

Mike
