Dan,

Great color on your 997! SA-WEET!

That said, my 928's have not been particularly costly to maintain over the years and many miles driven. I know PLENTY of 911 Turbo drivers (especially those who have modified their cars) who have spent 2X to 8X more than I have in maintaining their rides.

If you ARE in fact good with a wrench a 928 is really not bad at all! Plenty of parts availability and more than a few parts that are better in the ever increasing 928 aftermarket!

To own, no.

To drive, yes. Especially if it's supposed to be the daily driver.

Winning the lottery might be just enough if you start making modifications, such as having the head ported...

If you make it a daily driver and rely on it to get to and from work every day then I would allocate funds for a rental car, taxi or public transport for the times it does go down! Even on the cheap side you're looking at $30/day for a rental car...2 weeks in the garage or shop and you've spent a lot!

Or you could just buy 2 or a back up other daily driver

If your a perfectionist, make sure you are bankrolled.

After you sort them with all the ground cleaning, pent up maintenance, etc, they make great daily drivers.

This 84 5-speed of mine has ripped seats, no carpet, no ac. But its mechanicals are sorted, starts instantly and is a pleasure to drive. I put 30K mi on it as daily driver since I rescued it. Its more reliable than my old accord.

No, not for the basics you have above; figure whatever your mechanic's hourly is for those + fluids and pads = maybe $500/yr. And most any mechanic can do those.

Possible scenario: BUT IF you are sending it in for those, you are also sending it in for timing belt, etc. NOW you need someone who knows the 928 or you will be paying $100/hr to train him on it, IF you can find one, most will turn you away. Most mechanics don't want to do that and you get a half a$$ed job that will cost more later. He'll disable the tension warning sys b/c he doesn't want to mess with it and you won't know to re-tension the belt at 1,500 miles. Another 500 miles and the belt jumps teeth, you lose the engine, now you pay $5000 + labor for a new engine or $$$ for a valve job. If grease under the nails bothers you, you better have deep pockets, not Ferrari deep, but deep.

The example above assumes an interferance engine. An early MY, will prob not bend valves, but you will still be paying for something you didn't expect.

Thankfully, here in New York there are at least 5 shops I know of within 30 miles that can handle 928s with expertise...for now...1 within 3 miles and another within 10. There may even be 1 that is a half mile from my house-have to check with the owner.

There are not a heck of a lot; I think he is high.

OTH he is probably not including Frank Perry in Oakdale.

How do they say?

If you want to drive a 928, you must make a big fortune...

... into a small one.

Jason here in Plainview, NY

JSS, Mineola

European Auto Repair, Lynbrook

I lied--Autosport in Englewood, NJ is 35 miles away--was thinking from back in my days in Great Neck

I'd heard about Frank Perry but didn't include him...

Also Rennwerke in Elmsford (it's 45 miles-again miscalculation on distance-again Great Neck distance is under 30).

Possibly Ace Automotive in Plainview (can at least handle Mercedes transmissions)

Those are my 5.

Who are you fooling. You only work one out of every three days, have a fleet of 928's and you live on a yacht in FL. You're living the dream man!

Anybody who has lived on a boat wil tell you that it's more than a full-time job just staying even with stuff that needs attention. Add in a few 928's and the line between "passion" and "obsessed" is suddenly very clear-- it's right there behind you.
