Polished flatdisc rims look good ?
 

Hi,
I'm considering to polish my factory flatdisc rims but I'm not sure if it looks good. What do YOU think ???? Any pictures somebody ?

I sold a set a while ago, thought they looked really nice. Note the slots were painted black which helps a lot IMO.

Love the chrome flats. Mine are the plain dull finish.

Just yesterday Kevbolacy, Kevin Michael & I were just comparing the look of chromes vs. polished. We had the opportunity to compare them side by side.
The chromes looked exactly like those in Mark's pic above. The polished were on a beautiful black S4.
IMO:
Flats are the only factory wheel that look good chromed - particularly when the insides are painted black like Mark's were (I'd say that CS would look good chromed, but a non-factory chrome job on CS wouldn't be right)..
Chromes 'pop' on a black car...pretty much any color. Some might consider them too 'blingy'.
That said, polished look a bit more subtle and therefore don't 'pop' as much.
I think that polished is a more oem & more quality look than chrome.
...but polished and chrome is a nicer finish on flats than the painted silver.

Mine are chromed, they look good, and are easy to care for. But I think that the D90's or cup wheels look better polished or chromed. But that's just my opion.

Mine are plished and they look very OE like.

You didn't take any pictures ???? I'm curious about the polished rims.

I have chromed dish and although the chrome is lifting in a couple of places they give the car an upgraded period look. They look great on the platinum colored car.

I have also a smokey annodized? set that are nice, but getting scarred. They work well for a period look on the red cars in my opinion.

The thing I like most about this type of wheel is the extreme strength and the extra rubber of the 16" tires for GT cruising.

Glad you started the thread. Would love to see options for improving the look of the bleached-out regular annodized finish on a couple of sets in my basement. James said you can strip them with oven cleaner. Anybody have silver powdercoated flats?

I like the chrome wheels on Landseer's 928. Plus he used the stock 21mm spacer w/ the 8" wide rears. Makes for a great stance...

Yes. Wife calls them manhole covers on the money pit.

I just finished polishing my set yesturday. They look fantastic on my 83' guards red. The original clear coat had turned dark brown, Im not sure if this was an option or if the aluminum underneath had oxidized. Regardless it looked like crap. I tried just about everything I could find including aircraft stripper to remove the previous finish with no avail. Being the cheap highschool student that I am I used a 5' dual action sander with 150 grit paper to sand through the majority of the finish and then 220 grit to get the final bit off. I didnt mind because I'm not under any time constraints to finish but it took way too long to do all 4 rims. Then I finish wet sanded with 320,400,600,1000,2000 and then polish on a buffing wheel. They look real sharp but i cant decide weather to leave the center caps polished or paint them black. In all I say its worth it to have it done if you can find an easier way to do it than I did. Ill see if i can get pics up in a little bit.

The factory finish is anodized and flat rather porous and easily stained by most "Mag wheel" cleaner ptroducts. And yes anodizing is a hard alloy not easy to remove. Note that polished aluminum easily corrodes and will need ocassional touch up to maintain the shine. Aluminum is one metal that does not occur in nature because it is always combined with something else....just as your wheels will do.

The original owner exchanged the stock flats for chromed from Wheel Enhancement. They are back on the car at the moement. Still look great after 20 years.
