I've got a '90 S4. So, what would you guys recommend pairing up with this spring set if my preference is a spine-friendly ride?

Thanks,
Nicholas
Nicholas,

We've got one of each: our '88 S4 has stock suspension (standard/gray Boge's with 75K miles), and the GT has Eibach/Bilstein's (miles unknown) and rear Ott-links, and is set up about 10mm lower. They both handle great, but with the difference that you would expect: The GT feels is more "taut" with quicker weight-transfer, neutral in the corners and feels lighter. The S4 feels heavier, less quick, and tends towards understeer-- but that may be the drop-links more than springs/shocks.

OK, that's nice but what about the ride going down a crappy road? Again, no surprises-- the S4 soaks up uneven pavement a little better but neither would ever be mistaken for a Cadilac. Seriously rough roads will be annoying with either setup, and smooth roads will be a delight. We took the GT to Texas and back for OCIC (4800 miles RT from here) and never once said "crap, we brought the wrong car".

I've liked Bilsteins for a long time- they are well-damped without the harshness that I've experienced with Koni's. I think aging stock Boge's will be under-damped with the higher spring rate of the Eibach's. I am sure that the red Boge's would be fine but I think the ideal setup is the Bilsteins-- and a pair of Louie-Links. That's where we are headed with our S4.

Cheers, Jim

Thanks Jim for your review...just what I was looking for.

Thanks also for the tip re: "Louie's links".

Sorry Mark A.; didn't mean to run away with your thread......though a set purchase (Eibachs & Bilsteins) sounds like the order of the day!?!?

No problem but I just don't have a killer deal on the Bilsteins I can offer.
