First PCA meeting
So I went to my first PCA meeting this evening (thanks White Lightnin’ for telling me about it). I got there a little early to enjoy some adult beverages. While walking around, I introduced myself to one of the other people there:
“Hi, I’m Sanjay. This is my first meeting…I just purchased a 1988 928 S4”
“Oh”
Long silence
“928 huh? Interesting, I’ve seen some really bad ones, you know, the old ones”
“I think they all look fantastic, one of the most beautiful, technologically advanced and fastest cars ever produced”
“Not really, but it’s a good thing that the old ugly ones have been destroyed by now”
What a *****! I didn’t hang around long enough to find out what he drove, but I suspect it was a 911. Now I see what some of you mean about 911 owners being snobbish asses.
Aside from that, it was a fun time and Barry was kind enough to introduce me to some good people.

Wait until you go on some drives. Then it gets interesting. It'll sort the polishers and posures from the real enthusiasts.
I love motors, 928, 911, 924, 944, 914, 356 I don't care. I just quit talkin to the ******* as soon as they show themselves. .

That's ok. The real club is right here, bro.
You're close to SITM near Asheville, Frenzy near Dulles and we'll invite you to run with us to Texas next fall.

People like that are not car guys, screw him, he is a status guy, just a passing thing in the P-car world, they will always be there.
Real car people like all kinds of cars.

i went to my first meeting here in Albuquerque about a month ago. Great people, i just felt like the "young pup" in the room by at least 15 years... good conversations and banter. had a few 911 guys say i should auto cross with them, i said "how about a top speed cruise contest.." they politely declined.. heheheh

We don't even let people like that IN our Region! In fact all of the past presidents that I have known (and I am one of them) owned 928's and LOVED them! That or 944's, oh and even 914's! OMG! So, our group is VERY, VERY inclusive!

It was good to meet you tonight Sanjay... I was running behind and you had to take off early, so we didn't get too much of an opportunity to talk 928's. I was glad to be able to introduce you to some good people (& influential in the Porsche world, not just 928s).
About your unfortunate first impression... our region -and our specific area (Metrolina Area; Carolinas Region) of Charlotte hosted the 2008 Porsche Parade. We were quite literally under the P-world's magnifying glass. We had members of the Porsche family here; we had several of our members' cars here that should rightly be in the Porsche museum; we had one of the largest turnouts of any Parade (spectator & participant alike)... ever. And, it was one of the last Parades to be totally run by the host region. Now, there is a "National Parade Committee" that selects, prepares, runs & organizes all Parades from here out... with only minor host-region input. Essentially, we set the bar for all of the Parades yet to come.
That being said, Greg (blown87) hit the nail on the head:
The reaction you got exists in pretty much every car club for any marque... and it invariably stems from "ignorance of anything else".
The phrase: "Don't knock it until you've tried it", is especially true for our 928's.
Recall when the 928 came out, it was designed to be the successor to the 911. Sales were slumping and the engineers of the day thought they had wrung every last HP out of the 911 and future attempts at improvement would be a wasted effort. This automatically set the 911 die hard crowd against the 928.
The 928 became the flagship vehicle... eclipsing the 911 in all measurable categories: horsepower; top speed; luxury appointments; price and prestige. Strike two against the 928 from the "real Porsche owners".
Even the basic engineering of the 928 was "anti-Porsche"... it was a V8 muscle car! It was the American Bastardized Porsche with a water-cooled V8 in the front... instead of the air-cooled flat 6 (or 4) in the rear -the basic formula for Porsche success since the company's inception. Such blasphemy! Strike three.
Built as a replacement instead of a compliment to an existing model line doomed the 928 from the start. This and the 3 strikes listed above often contribute to the lay person's opinion of the 928.
What you experienced could be attributed to ego; ignorance; misinformation; rumor, gossip & hearsay; fashion trends; or any host of reasons. But 99% of the time -that opinion was formed outside of the 928 experience. They have never driven one, owned one or even ridden in one -but their idea is firm. Sort of a horse wearing blinders.
Granted, there are horror stories of ownership & maintenence woes (as in any make or model), that have earned a foul image for the 928 to that particular person -but most are unfounded.
In my muscle car days prior to my Porsche ownership, I used to scoff at the 914. I will admit it was purely out of a lack of information or experience with that model... but go to any AutoX and a 914-6 will be in one of the top 2 spots -or both! My initial opinion was unfounded and biased. I also scoffed at the 4-cylinder 944s... until I went for a ride in a Turbo. Like Sun Tzu reasoned, the outward appearance should be one of easy prey, so as to lure the enemy to certain death.
Bottom line on this is: even we can be jaded as 928 owners... as 'elitism' can take many forms. Take the time to get to know folks in the club and you will find many former 928 owners. For whatever reason, they chose to move on to something else. But you will hear fond stories of "the fastest"; "the smoothest"; "most complete" cars they have ever owned... their 928.
You have been and will be commended for jumping in with both feet into the 928 shark tank... just try not to take offense from comments and individuals like this.
Instead... once you get used to your 928's power and handling and it's up on its shots -give them a ride.
They'll get 'sharkbit' too!
