Broken Louver - Replacement ?
Hi,
I have been going through the paces on an '87 S4 is just bought. Despite hours of research I have not been able to locate a replacement for one of the bottom ventilaiton louvers (the ones that open and close). Any thoughts on where one of these can be obtained.
I also need to figure out if the system still works. I'll hit the manual on that, but if you have any pointers its appreciated.
Thanks,
Dave

Many owners chose to remove the flaps, rather than keeping them working.
When they don't work, they can stay closed and cause the engine to overheat. When they do work, they give the car a small edge in aerodynamics while the flaps are closed, and possibly the engine heats up a hint quicker.
Porsche eventually discontinued them in 1991.

Nicole, the cooling issue is a very good point to consider - I may just repair the broken louver for cosmetics, but leave in the open position.

Sounds like a good idea. The driving factor in the summer time it will be important to cool the engine. The biggest damage to any engine is to overheat it.

Mine work perfectly but as mentioned it's pretty common to do without them.
I've already decided that if mine go out they will not get fixed. In winter they help the car warm up a bit quicker and as far as I can tell that's ALL they do.

Here are some pics on non-destructive louverectomy, hoepfully useful for seeing how the flaps' frame goes together and comes apart.

Be careful getting the cooling duct/shroud re-installed on all its clips so it doesn't get pushed down at speed and block airflow.
