Found another 86.5 eastern NC - think I'm going to pass ...again
Looked at another 86.5 928 automatic over lunch. Ad -
Black 1986 PORSCHE 928s, auto., v8, sunroof, 150,651 mi. Runs great. MUST SELL. Negotiable. Price: $4000.00 or B/O 910-326-7314
Owner changed oil but not much else. He said the car had an aftermarket chip. It ran well, shifted firmly, sport seats in good shape (though up/down adjusters didn't work). Injectors were surprisingly noisey; I don't think it was lifters sounds. Then he told me he has documentation of the last timing belt in 1998, last retension in 2003. Borrowed time.... a long time ago.
I could do the belt myself for a day and a half's work (hey, beer time included ) and the price of a belt and WP, but what is the going shop rate these days? I may bargain with that in mind, but I'm also not sure I want to mess with the hassle.

How did the paint and body look? The seats are in good shape I see-any rips?
Thanks!

Must be in the sticks. Never heard of Hubert. Q-bert maybe.
That is a lot of car for $3500!
Shop rate for a TB and rebuilt water pump replacement will be $1200 and up.

If you don't want to mess with the hassle of changing a timing belt then maybe the 928 is not for you. There are many other chain driven cam cars that don't need this hassle.

I allow a budget of $5k in parts for everything on any used 928 that will make it sound and reliable. New or old, they ALL need fuel hoses, coolant hoses, intake refresh, brakes and brake lines, rotors, TB and tensioner, cam gears, usually a WP, radiator tanks, and often tires, battery, and AC work. LH rebuild too if it's an S4. That's just to make the car a safe and reliable driver, no cosmetics yet.
This 86.5, if it's cosmetically nice as the pictures here show, is probably a steal at $3500. Just be aware that the $5k mechanical maintenance anchor is almost undoubtedly dragging behind it. There's truth in the JBism about being $5k away from being a $6k car. And that $5k is just the parts and pieces costs; no labor allowance.
If I was in NC I'd be looking hard at this car.

Absolutely. Caliper kits. Motor mounts. A few sensors. All fuses. All 53 relays for the sport of it. Boots on rack, Boots and repack for axles. A few suspension pieces in front. Pan gasket. Maybe trans hoses.
Heater valve and short hose. All fluids at least once. PS pump kit and gravity hose. Radiator blue drain screw. Clips for headlight linkage. O2 sensor.
