Not sure I would call the Phaeton a super car but those things were FREAKISHLY expensive when they came out and now can be had for a song! $19k for a W12 4 door VW saloon is pretty damn good! They say those cars were SUPER NICE too, but folks just could not wrap their mind around spending $75k+ on a VW! No matter WHAT engine it had in it!

I swear, I was told the same about my S4, their like "what? that's a Porsche", making fun of the frog eyes. They tell me sell that thing and buy a real Porsche, a 911. very funny.

I like the 308, the looks are much better than the Mondial. But if they are all expensive to maintain why not save money and buy a latter model that looks better.

Tell them to go get a 911 of the same model year and then you want to run them for pinks! They will either take you up on it and you will have a fine 911 to go home with on top of your 928 or they will go look up the stats and be ashamed!

I did say polarizing looks. Go for a ride in one, you might change your mind. But hey the OP said "supercar" and I'm sorry but M3s, 850s, Mercs, Corvettes, NSXs and the like are NOT supercars. A supercar is something rare and special, fast and expensive to fix, probably fragile, not something you see every day, with looks that make your head spin (good or bad). A 928 almost fits the bill, but not really. Oops did I say that?

There are $20k Countachs out there but they will need 80k in work to be at all roadworthy. As much as I want a 308 it isn't a supercar either, and neither is the Mondial. Now a Testarossa definitely qualifies and I personally turned down one a few years ago for $22k...owner had started it in 10-deg cold and it really didn't like that.

Because the early-80s (16v, fuel injected) 308/Mondials are total dogs compared to the earlier weber carb-equipped cars. Of course you then get the fun of tuning an engine with four webers on it, but we're all gluttons for punishment here anyway, aren't we? The later 32v 308/Mondials are a significant bump up in price and probably not available under $30k.

If you really like the Mondial (it does have four seats) then the one to get is a Mondial T - these are a significant upgrade from the earlier car - the engine is the longitudinally-mounted 3.4 from the 348 - the earlier cars are transverse engine and transmission like the 308. Huge improvement in performance and reliability (they actually weigh less than the early cars) but now I am off topic because there is likely no way to find one of those for less than $30k either...

back on topic - if you would consider a Jarama why not an Espada? Maybe mildly polarizing looks, but much better looking than a Jarama, if you ask me. Same V12 with parts made of unobtanium too. These often come up for around $20k.

Might I suggest a DeTomaso Pantera. You may find one for around $35,000.00. It will need up grading, but once you drive one you'll be hooked. The most expensive part is the dash 2 ZF transaxel, but thier very strong and safety wiring is all thats needed. You can build a Cleveland or Windsor 351 as big as your wallet will let you. Mine handles like a 700hp go-kart. And they have that incredible Pantera sound. IMHO, the Pantera is the most badass car ever built, half muscle car, half exotic.

I'm thinking the same thing. Very broad definition of supercar here. My criteria starts with "must have cost as much as a house when it was first sold" and "can't be a special version of a regular car" (which would eliminate most of the BMWs). I might come up with more criteria later...

So true about the E46 M3 and Supra...way to common. The M/B 600 SEC might qualify though as you hardly ever see them now, you almost never saw them when they were a current product even as they were so expensive they didn't sell many of them.

Early model one can be had in the low $20's with coupes running about $25. My brother picked up a 2003 coupe last winter for $25. V10 power with chrysler parts bin brakes.
