Why would a mondial be a super car, isn't it like the 924 of Porsche, affordable fun car with an expensive badge?
Hi

Actually the Ferrari Mondial is a sort of baby supercar....

I used to own one, and they are VERY good....

Very fast and light and goes around corners like on rails (think Go-Kart)....Cheap as well for a Ferrari....

Disadvantages are the suspension is VERY HARD....you could tell if you ran over a pencil lol...the gearbox is very clicky...think Vw Beetle...parts are very expensive ,even if you do your own labour (the dealer wanted around $4000 to change the cambelts) which need doing every 20.000 miles...

Having said all that its a V8 quad valve, twin cam 3.2. engine that is virtually unbreakable and they go like s**t off a shovel..

In a drag race it would beat a 928 to around 100 then the 928 would take it...

Our 928`s are long distance GT cars, you would NOT want to drive a Mondial long distance as you would have backache after 50 miles though...

But for the money, very good value...

All the best Brett

Lamborghini Jarama. Polarizing looks, +2 seating, and continent-crushing performance, a lot like an Italian 928 actually. Just phenomenal. Under 20k will need work but what a car.

For years it wa the Twin Turbo Supras because of the 300+ HP and Toyota reliability. My favourite besides the 928 will always be the BMW 850 CSi

I don't know about getting a decent 996 or M roadster/coupe for under 20K like that website suggests.

Another good candidate is a 2000 ish E39 BMW M5 for around 20 k.

If you shop, you can find a decent 4 cylinder Lotus Esprit for $20k. Some V8tt cars are down into the high 20s now. I want one badly.

Here's a few NSX's. A couple just above the $30K mark and a couple for around low $20's. The second one is in Dallas and looks like its in great shape!

Isnt it the same thing as the 308, but with a differnent shape? I think lowered and fitted with some fat tires, it would be a cool cheap supercar. after all, it is a ferarri!

I also really like the 8 Series. The problem with cheap exotics is the cost of maintenance. They make 928s look like kids stuff.

My old boss in Chicago bought a Mondial off Ebay for $15,000. The auction was worded to make it sound as if it had the major engine service it required for the given mileage. I think 30k miles. Anyway, it didn't and it ran poorly. He spent $10,000 in parts and labor to get to up to snuff. His wife was fairly disgusted with the car and made him sell it immediately. It then sold for $20,000...

There is no cheap Ferrari.

I just bought a C32 AMG to replace my wife's 968 for under $15k. I don't know if I would call it a "supercar", but I am really liking it (349hp stock is not too shabby).

NSX talk about maintenance cost, my friend has spent 3k in air work and 4k for a squeak in the rear suspension.

I'm considering picking up an 03 M3 with 60k miles for 16k but have to talk the wife into it (this whole "we have a kitchen to redo" thing is cramping my style). This is the lowest I've seen one especially for the miles but they are out there for under 20k.

As far as supercars... You can find 88-mid 90s Lotus Esprit Turbos for well under 20k. Also the 8 series BMWs, although it could be argued that they aren't "supercars", can be picked up cheap for such a rare and expensive car.

Edit: I guess I need to read all of the posts before replying as to not repeat other's posts...

Now this is a car that you could spend a fortune on and get ZERO STREET CRED! Wow that thing is UG-LY! Certainly does not look like a Lambo...if you said, I have a Lambo and showed up in that car you would be laughed at... I don't doubt the performance and usefulness of the car, don't get me wrong, but it is NOT PRETTY! Looks like a Gremlin and an Isuzu got in a wreck and melded together...

YMMV!

Good to hear that there are affordable E46 M3's and NSX's out there...I have not personally come across any and I too have heard stories about little things on NSX's that can eat you alive. Brakes are expensive on them too btw! They say the engine and trans are bullet proof (so it is the accessories that are problematic)...sounds like another super car that all of us here know and love already!
