So you think you want a 928
WHY? This is not a negative thing it is to get you to understand that you are purchasing a highly evolved motor car. It is not to be taken lightly that and advanced car like this is a great thing to own.
Which one is the perfect fit for you? Well ask these questions and then see where you fall in the quest for the Land Shark.
1. Fully restored car that is perfect in every way so you turn the key and drive.
2. Very nice car that is just a little under the weather due to lack of concern or funding by the PO.
3. Just get one at a good price and fight it out so that you have your Land Shark and go from there.
Well I did #3 by buying a car from Ebay that was just so badly presented and lied about that it was almost grounds for criminal charges. Then we purchased two more cars based on #2. This worked out very well for us because we got the Ebay car which became a donor car for the other two. We are now parting out the EBAY car to help finish the cars.
Now ask yourself these questions.
1.Who does your oil changes and minor work on your car? If it is YOU then you are safe with option #2. If you do not at least do this much then #1 is better for you.
2.Who does your major repairs YOU then #2 and #3 might work for you.
3.If your car breaks and you grab the cell phone and credit card you MUST go with #1 so that you can see how good these cars are and you get a sense of what is correct and save yourself the heartaches by just keeping up what you own.
Why this post? To get you to think before you spend. These cars are complicated and simple at the same time. If you do not panic and ask questions you will enjoy the tinkering that goes with ownership of these cars. Some of threads talk about how bad these cars are because they leak oil or this quits or that quits, It is like us old farts we are falling apart also.

This is a good point, the more you work on them you realize they are not all that complicated at all, but you have to step back and think about what you are doing and looking at. They are well engineered at automobiles and if you have the chance to just understand how they work they are fairly simple to work on.

I think the problem most people make is that they find a Porsche they can afford up front that is not a 914 or 944. They see this car that must be something crazy fast because it has that big ol' V8 in it. Most of these cars clean up very nice with an afternoon in the drive way washing it. You look past the possible questionable interior and lack of records because the seller tells you he took care of everything himself and swears to you it runs like a dream. If the car starts most people are hooked by the sound and happily hand over cash. Then the real fun begins.
Parts unless you are in the know or spend time on this forum can be a chore. Porsche dealerships are of no real help and most small garage mechanics have never seen a 928. You must want to work on your own car to own it unless you are willing to spend new car money keeping it up. You must want continue to learn about these cars.
Even a GTS is a 15 year old car and is going to need things done to it for upkeep. The 928 should in my opinion be viewed as a classic car and with that comes a responsibility to maintain properly. If you want a cheap Porsche look elsewhere.
Just my little rant. Thanks for listening.
P.S. I Love My 928

What, you mean the 928 I bought won't just run and run and run like my Acura MDX with not a dollar spent on it year after year?! What was I thinking? (hee, hee, hee)

I've heard two funny responses to my 81.
"VA antique tags huh, that's not an antique it's an 80 something"
"Wow is that a new 2009 Porsche!!!"
I even forget how old this thing is, but I probably wouldn't own one if I wasn't a total gear head and did the work myself. That's all part of the fun owning one.

I found the best reason to buy another - i was going to give my daughter mine for her 25th b'day, but after i replaced the seats ( with 2001 cabriolet's) my wife said why don't we keep it, find her another, so i did! Now i'm refreshing a 84 S Euro - to be delivered to my daughter in May, 2010 ( lrpman - in Sumter, SC) !

No did not know better just knew if a man built it I could fix it and just hunker down and get what you need to do the job. Yes the first one was a bad deal AT THE TIME now it is the best thing I bought since I will have (2) good cars and still be able to part out the spare 1984.
Heck only have about $7,600.00 in all three cars. That is what one would have cost in better shape but you must understand that this dummy spends money on this thing so I can claim a MENTAL problem !!!!

You know, another interesting point is the notion of "freshly serviced". In eBay ads you often see dealers offering reassurance that their 928 has been "freshly serviced".
In our age of nearly maintenance-free Japanese cars, I guess you could say with a straight face that changing the oil, topping off fluids and checking the tire pressure is being "serviced". Obviously this is scant comfort on a 928 with critical components like the timing belt system to look after.

The best car to compare the 928 is a 308 Ferrari. You can do 90% of the maintenance yourself and not go totally broke doing it. Heck the TR I had held 48 quarts of Mobil 1 and you needed a lift to even think about changing it yourself. There was NO PLACE to jack the car up to any height that you could get under it. Pick it up from the rear and the spoiler hit the floor.
I think these cars are a nice balance of exotic and normal. With guys like Wally and 928rus it is a good network of support.

I have always purchased my vehicles with my heart and never my head !
Having said that i do spanner my toys far more than they ever need , always have always will .
I have loved the look of the 928 for more years than i care to remember and can not wait to own one , i have known for years that these are complicated cars and often very neglected by uneducated or ill informed owners .
Having read all the "disaster" threads in here and every other forum i have surfed through will not sway my desire to own one .
Hell i've owned a Rotary for just over 4 years now talk about drama's !!! but loved every minute of it ( apex seal after apex seal LMAO )
