Has anyone gotten a rear Mounted turbo to work?
I have read a lot of post's but it doesn't look like anyone has made one work or posted results. I did see a s4 w/ a STS system on it. Has anyone been able to build there own setup yet or what problems did you run into?

That's not a rear turbo. He is talking about the guys who put the turbo in place of the rear muffler. Last I heard it was running well and was making close to 500rwhp?

Tom M? Is that the red S4 that had a complete bottomend build up for a tubo setup. Fabio posted the link. That car used a STS setup. Or is it something he did himself.

During the "rim of the world" drive for SF '05 he was 2 or 3 cars behind me and I could hear the turbo whining when he accelerated.

Technically Mark R's system is a MID-turbo, but it is at the back of the car just ahead of the transmission... works VERY WELL...you can see it in action on my 928 EVOLUTION DVD and I have of course seen it in person many times. Making some very good numbers at this point. I can't stress enough how important it is to have your car running PERFECTLY before playing with stuff like Turbo's and S/C's!!!

Marks is in front of the transaxle, as opposed to the side of it or slightly behind it where the muffler would be.
They are rear mounted as in they are at the rear of the car. They are notated this way because typically a turbo is attached to the exhaust manifold.
Mid mount, rear mount, same thing, the application should dictate where the turbo is placed. The verbage shouldnt make a difference. The 928 manual happens to have space in the area thats otherwise used up with a torque converter. If it were truly in the middle of the car it would be under the drivers ***.
I think Mark has his turbo in the correct spot, but i think correcting someone who calls it a rear mount and not Marks term "mid mounted" is just kinda silly.
I still love ya James, But it deserved an "oh brother" But rest assured thats a term i only use with friends.

As to the original question of do they work.
Last i heard YES, at least Mark convinced me of this 2 years ago. At the time he hadnt posted dyno numbers though, but maybe he has since.
His system for what it is is very nicely done. There are some things I dont like about it or would change just because I dont like the way it LOOKS. But i think the idea is sound, and it is fairly inexpensive, if not the least expensive boost option.

Yep, I had the rear mount turbo on my 89GT (not some lowly S3 LOL) for a few years. I put it on my car since we sublease space to the P9 Motorsport guys at our shop. JT (p9) blew a headgasket and we rebuilt his engine specifically for boost. While we were doing the engine build, I figured we could get some additional testing in the mean time. It took the better part of the day to get it on..I only had a 5lb spring in there and fueling mods were handled by the SMT-6. I never did get it dialed in and I think (been a while) that it only got to 400ish rwhp running way rich. The system came off a few years ago because I was dealing with another major issue (my tensioner kept coming off the car) and I wanted to get the car back to stock. BTW...it took 2 hours to get my car back to stock and after it was off, I immediately noticed the "lack" of power in my GT LOL..
JT put another system on his red 89S4 and with this system (running more than 10lbs and utilizing the sharktuner to really optimize the fuel and spark) he got 615rwhp. He is still running around here, but I think the economy has slowed his development.
His partner in crime (Chuck Ahrens) is running the system that came off my car on his 88AT but I don't know what numbers he is putting down.
The big diff between Mark R and the P-9 turbos is that the P-9 system works on automatic 928's and for now Mark R's only works on manuals.
