Default Will check rear coupler

I just spoke with Roger and reiewed your information - I 'll check the rear coupler I've replaced many in my 911 days with brons. - As I had found that my front guide tube ball was so tight that I took several hammer blows after sliding the heat shields out of the way to remove it from the ball that why I have not inpsected the rear couplers as jet and if this works out to be so critical than the only way to go is brass bushings for the rear coupler and should be made a part of the install guide.

Also for your information none of the related components have ever been work on before even the nylon insert from the original shifter are still in great shape.

More after I check the rear coupler....

Good to know Herman,

I will check this again later on. But I need to sign off for now. I hope that you get that sorted with the plastic bushings.

The shifter will have the option of the original plastic bushings or the upgraded bronze bushings.

The shifter has been available for a while with the plastic bushings and a number have been sold and are in use. I have been waiting for the special bronze bushings to complete the package. They should be here soon.
A number of customers have already opted for the bronze bushes and are patiently waiting for me to deliver them.

Thanks to Jim Doerr here is a picture of the bronze bushes.

I think the big question here is: Does it improve shifting to the point that Roger would use one?

I'm sitting on $110 of 928s 'R us gift certificates. Hmmmm, what should I buy...

Rog- what are you using for a demo? I mean, with all the Rogerboxes around your place, where does one go to see/feel the improvement afforded by the new products?

Default My 5 cents worth....

I’ve got it to work after changing the rear coupler bushings

I made an operator error by assuming that my coupler bushing would be in great shape and didn’t need replacement after I found that my front ball cup was such a tight fit (cup it required some heavy hammer blows to get it of the ball on the TT) I had opted to slide back the heat shields any way since I wanted to secure front guide tube instead of letting it lay loose on the TT and perhaps rattle.

The instructions I got from the supplier mentioned to turn it CW whereby the cup pops of the ball I found this to impossible and did the above instead.

Based on my experience I recommend that the rear coupler bushings are replaced at all times when installing this short shifter.

To undo the rear coupler I had to cut the coupler dust cover, pry out the old plastic coupler bushings as I had to apply heat to the coupler set screw in order to break it loose. (it appears the factory put locktite on it)

If you consider installing this you my encounter the following issues;

• The front guide tube will not just pop of and will required to be forced from the forward ball on the TT
• Consider to strap down the now loose front guide tube to the TT
• Make a paper template with the location for the required holes to be drilled
• You’ll have to remove the rubber dust cover over the rear coupler (perhaps this should be an optional item to add to the kit just like brass or plastic bushings is an option)
• You may have to heat the set screw on the rear coupler in order to get it loose
• Removing of the center console (in my case I didn’t need to do this as my center piece below the ashtray was already gone.

So all in all it takes time to do these things right versus just drilling two holes that mount the cross bracket.

I did test drive the car for a few miles and it feels very direct and very tight.
I may want to make some minor adjustment to select 4&5th gear but will first put on some more miles before I go there.

In conclusion

Now that there’s less shifting than on a Roger box it may make those obsolete.

And a note of thanks to Roger and Colin for there assistance

Hmmm....this conversion looks like a fairly substantial DIY project. Not sure I'd want to try to tackle it.
