Default Price Reduced - $5000 For Sale - '87 S4 Auto, ~86K miles

Updated price - I've clearly overshot on my pricing. Reduced to $5000, or best offer.

Well, it's unfortunately come time that I must sell my 928. I've had 2 additions to the family, and for the last 2 years just haven't had the time to work on the car, and little reason to drive it. It's mostly sat in the garage for the last 2 years.

I originally purchased my 1987 928 S4 in November 2004 with 72K miles, odometer died at the current 83,498 miles, and I've probably put 2-3K on it, I'd estimate. I purchased it based simply on photos, and it turned it to be a less than stellar example. It has some things going for it, but mostly it's average to slightly below. I've posted a number of photos here:

http://gallery.me.com/chrisfabri#100...lack&view=grid

Here are the option codes:

C03 - US Emissions
158 - Radio (doesn't have this radio anyway)
220 - LSD
302 - type designation on rear end
347 - Platinum Anodized wheels
474 - sport shocks
490 - sound system
494 - additional amp (no longer installed)
570 - rear a/c
650 - sunroof

Which at this point is all interesting, cause it's an automatic and it does *not* have rear type designation. I'm really not sure how I got almost 5 years into this and the option codes don't match. I'm pretty sure it has the sport shocks since it has the red Boges actually on it. No definitive answer on the LSD, I seem to remember the wheels spun the same direction when off the groun, so I *think* it really is a working LSD.

Well, since I'm off to a roaring start with that bombshell, I'll hit the good list, which is short. Engine is pretty strong, I have pictures of 2 dyno runs included in the images. No side moulding and the folding rear wing. Based on VIN car is an 10/86, #1100. About 2 years ago I had the MAF and LH computer refurbished, the latter by Electronik Repair. Refurbished the CV joints about 2 years ago with 4 new boots myself. All the A/C vacuum actuators are currently working, as well as all the engine vacuum, although the flappy valve is sticking. Other than A/C and odometer not working, most everything else works, more or less, since I was last seriously driving it. Stereo is an Alpine CDA-9851 with iPod adaptor - works for all Apple devices for playing music, but only charges non-USB type devices. That cord is run to the center armrest. This is the last year of the vacuum actuated cruise, and it works, I had the brain reconditioned about 3 years ago, and it holds speed just fine.

Now for the bad. As I said, it's sat for 2 years, so no fluid changes or really anything. Auto tranny fluid was replaced with synthetic 4 years ago. Transmission works as expected. As mentioned, A/C doesn't work, I do have a Nippondenso compressor I was intending to put in myself, which never happened. There was a paintjob done at some point before I got the car, it's ok, but the bumpers aren't in the greatest shape. Leather is in ok shape, drivers seat has some bolster wear and I managed to put a small hole in the bottom cushion. Sunroof was not re-installed correctly (which I have remedied), probably during the paint job, so there was definitely some water leakage, and a number of panels have warped to small degrees. Tires have probably 5K of life left in them in the rear, maybe more on the front, I put Avon M500's on for almost all of the miles, and wear is nice and even, so alignment looks pretty good. Wheels aren't in best shape. I think it's on it's 3rd steering rack, which I haven't touched, but I know the boots have some tears in them. Adjustable air flaps don't work, and have been left open. The motor appears to be dead, and there's one wire that has no connectivity Dashboard and pod look like hell. I had one original key, I had a Huf key and a generic key made from photos which both work great. Manuals are somewhere, I'll dig them up.

I have various amounts of prior work documented, mostly from '91-'98, then some stuff I had done professionally, and not great documentation of what I did myself. There's obviously lots of stuff missing. I've saved the best for last: Timing belt is probably from about '96, but it has around 20K miles on it, and was retensioned in '06 or so by Foreign Performance in Evansville, who said the belt looked new and didn't recommend replacing it. I know all the different religion people have on belt replacement, so I'll simply say this - I'm not going to replace the belt, and I'm not going to discount the price for not having a newer belt on or for your desire to replace it as soon as you get it - I think my overall price reflects the condition of the car. I also have no measurements on thrust bearing wear, but I've released it 3 times since I've owned it, the first time it moved a lot, the next 2 times barely at all. I don't feel confident with my abilities to get an accurate measurement, either. . Car was winter driven, and if somebody would like a 928 to drive through the snow, this one has already been exposed to the salt, and I'll throw in the winter wheels.

At this point, I mostly need to get it out of the garage and make space for my other cars. You can certainly find better examples of a 928 our there, and I'm certainly not trying to deceive anybody with my description. This car has been very reliable in terms of starting and running, never left my stranded, performance seems on par with the few other 928s I've been in, and it looks ok. What I'm really hoping is to keep this in the family, and hopefully find a caring owner who will ideally bring it back up into better condition than I was able to. I'm ok with the mechanical work, so I've invested my limited talents there, but for somebody who is good with body work and interior work, this could be steal. Maybe with the decent engine this would make somebody a nice race car. So I'm posting it up here at what I'd like to think is a fair price, but am willing to negotiate. If anybody wants more details, please contact me via Rennlist PM and I'll give a number to give me a call and will talk for as long as you'd like (and probably longer!) about the car. Anybody near by is welcome to come drive it, or have a proxy do so for you. Please ask questions here in the thread about anything obvious I've missed so I can do my best to follow-up in public so everybody can hear the details.

It's been a while since I've been here, I definitely miss all the discussion that goes on here and the fine folks. It's been a great run in the 928, but priorities change, and it's time for me to move on.

.

I forgot a few other items on the "good" list:

new motor mounts in '05 - went with the Anchor solid.

Front pads are relatively new, figure no more than 5K on them. Got the rotors lightly used from Gary Knox at the same time, they had gone through 1 or 2 track days. This was fall '06 on both of these, now that I go through a few old emails. chris
