Everyone keeps saying the same thing about the Cayenne, I still think it's ugly. Especially when compared to it's VW cousin the Touareg.

When I first saw a new Camaro up close I was stunned by the size, particularly by how tall the hoodline was.

A key reason that the 928 has such an elegant shape is that everything is in proportion, including the low hood line. That doesn't come without a cost however, and constrains the engine designers: no room underneath for a deep sump, not much room on top for the intake, not quite enough height in front for the radiator.

Design is always a compromise between the aesthetic and the practical. I think the Panamera would look much nicer if it were simply squished vertically, but that would make it less practical as a four-person car-- and the tall Cayenne engine would not have fit.

Personally, I think the 928 designers got it just right.

Recently I was chatting with a PCNA representative about the Panamera.

The conversation started when someone asked if the Panamera was really that ugly in person. After a few facial expressions PCNA guy said: "well.....photos do not do it justice...."
He went on to explain Dr.W (former head of Porsche and father of the Panamera) climbed into the back seat and hit his head on the ceiling. He ordered the roof raised to accommodate. Per this guy, Dr.W is about 6' 4" tall.
He said the designers were not very thrilled about the new design direction.

The Tuareg design has aged poorly as compared to the Cayenne IMHO. Of course my eyes and sense of style may be failing me but again its my opinion so

If Porsche was still independent I could see the reasoning behind the Panamera to fill a certain gap but now that they are part of VW the Panamera is repetitive. It will be nice to see Porsche focus strictly on sports and GT cars once again. Would also be cool if they put more money into racing to further advance the cars.

Regardless I like the Panamera and if I had the means and the need I would definitely consider it.

Oh and I do like that shade of blue

I'am waiting for the coupe, I'am not a big fan of sports sedans. When we have passengers we use the wife's Tahoe. Porsches are sports cars, and should remain sports cars. If someone wants a sedan then choose from the other brands. Porsche's should remain true to thier racing nature. The 928 is a car that has to be experienced to be appreciated. That is why we care for our 928's the way we do. I for one am not looking for an imitation 928. IMHO, Joe

Everyone keeps using the argument: "well the SUV keeps making money...."

So, if Porsche released a re-badged SMART that would sell like hotcakes. This doesn't make it a good idea for the brand.

Porsche has a size / weight problem, they need to get back to their roots = building sports car. The Cayman / Boxster come up short on performance because God forbid, something might be faster than the new bloated 911.

If anyone can "fix" Porsche, it's Ferdinand Piëch. Thank the car Gods he's back where he belongs, at Porsche.

Having Mrmerlin's beautiful 928 parked next to the Panamera didn't do the new Porsche any favors. If I was selling the Panamera, I wouldn't want a "SHARK" any where near that car.

For what is can accomplish, the Panamera looks right. I wish they would have kept closer to the original design concept... The rear quarters look much better IMO.. Look at where the door handles are there...(very bottom), but It's still an elegant design. Everyone keeps comparing the Panam to the 928. What is more fair, is a comparison of the Panam to the stretched 928 4 door. When you compare these two, the Panama looks fantastic IMO.... I love 928's, but in my book, the stretched 928 is the fugly one... I mean.... Look at the rear glass on the stretched 928... That rear end is AMC pacer ugly....

Agreed. It's that sexy hoodline again, but the Cayenne motor would never have fit.
