New Owner - 86 928S
I just wanted to say thank you to everyone whom answered questions, provided commentary swaying me away from a Euro with a US transplant. I finally bought my 928 and am giving it a once over this weekend to track down some electrical issues. Already have fluids in the garage for a weekend of bonding and a list of parts on the way from 928Specialists to get her back to top shape.
I plan to clean, moisturize and redye the interior eventually, but ket right now is replacing hoses, inspecting the TB and torquetube, and getting fluids refreshed.
White on burgundy, 97k miles, a new battery, fuel drain and flush, fuel pump and lines to bring her back to life so I could get her home. Now the fun begins. I look forward to contributing to the 928 community!

A couple odd findings. While at the mechanic, I think the glass fell out of my driver side mirror, and every one the front lenses (fog, turn and headlights) have a 1/8 inch thick transparent rubber film. I notice them after investigating why my headlights looked yellow. First I have seen this on the car, and my guess is these aren't factory covers? Is this a typical modification?

Looks nice. 86 is excellent choice. Plan to share-up some good pictures of stuff as you work through the issues. Several of us relative newbies are working on 85/86, plus we all have Porken's posts due to his affliction with these years.
I don't have any film coverings on my lenses. If they protected them from rock damage, then you are way ahead.

Congrats nice looking car. By chance did you pick that up in Toledo Ohio? I know it would have been a long haul for you but it looks some what familiar?

PPI went moderately well. Due to the results, I negotiated the price down even more. (Good and bad)
A few electrical systems not working, but the tech said they are probably simple fixes, but he recommended I flush them out versus paying him per hour.
There wasn't a whole lot I didn't already know, and I saw a few things the tech didn't catch (how do you not know the cruise control stalk is missing?) A few things weeping (trans pan and transaxle, but neither enough to cause a drop to form), other than the electrical gremlins, he recommended new belts and tires, and intake plenum boots. Right now, it wants to die at idle, but at 10+ mph she runs strong. Fluids, intake boots, some relay/fuse replacements, and she should be drivable. Interior needs some work, but only cracks are on the pod.
I plan to inspect the timing belt next week after I get the tensioner tool. It was replaced 5 years and 2000 miles ago along with all the belts in front of it, so I'm not that worried about catastrophic failure too much. I am a little sad I have to replace the almost new tires that are dry rotted.

If you're hunting electrical gremlins, the best thing you can do is start by hunting down and cleaning all the ground points. This'll take a couple of hours, but is well worth it (although you won't be able to hit a couple of the ones at the rear of the engine bay until you do your intake manifold refresh).
While you're getting at the ground points behind the fuse panel, pull out the panel completely (actually pretty easy - just looks intimidating), and clean the contacts on all the fuse holders, relays and replace any badly corroded fuses. This takes longer - due to the fiddly cleaning of contacts. About 4 hours to do.
After that, you may well find some of the gremlins have disappeared, and at the least, it eliminates a lot of the future troubleshooting angst
Attached is an excellent guide to ground points that I saved from somewhere a couple of years ago. I forget where, but profuse thanks to the original author of this version, whoever you may be!

I have some spare glass from a S4 that should work for your mirror.
You can have one if you need it, just a short drive from Bham in a 928 of maybe a hour and a half and it is yours.

Interesting that you said the mirror glass fell out. Mine both did the same thing within about two weeks of each other last year. Seems they had about a 24 year life on the glue.

You've got lots of options for personalizing your baby or just making what's there even better and more reliable. Not sure which ground points Hilton was talking about that can't be reached until you do the top end refresh, if you take the airbox out you can reach both of the ones by the bell housing.
Take your time getting to know your baby and she'll never leave you stranded. PM is much easier to deal with (and less stressfull) than trying to catch up on maintenance or waiting for things to break. It sounds like you already plan to do things that way, which is great.

Dan - It's a local car to Birmingham for most of it's life. Was originally a TX car I believe, then a local PCA member owned it for about 10 years, then changed hands a couple times, now with me. As a stab in the dark I offered the owner significantly less(originally more than half, eventually even less), as his asking price was out of my budget. He said yes, and he just wanted to see her up and running again. SWEET!
I'm already digging into the fusebox, and the questions are piling up. I had no clue they could get that corroded. Also, looks like someone in the past just went through plugging random fuses in rather than looking up the correct one.
Now, my drivers rear blinker works (it didn't before), and the headlights now pop up and come one (they didn't work either). I also hear what sounds like the AC Compressor trying to switch on, but I don't want to run the car any more than I have to until I replace the plenum boots.
Three electrical questions.
1.Does anyone know what the "booted" wire is to the left of my panel? Is it possibly the amp remote turn on for my blaupunkt cassette (I know you're envious)
2. Any clue what the random cut brown wire is coming OVER the middle of my fuse panel? It's not plugged into a relay spot, as it looks in the picture, just a loose wire.
3. I have a "TEST" relay in one spot in my relay set. It almost looks as if you place a small fuse in it. Is this out of place or does everyone have a "TEST" relay in the place of one of their normal relays?
I'm super excited about already fixing some of the issues. THANK YOU GUYS (AND LADIES) ALL FOR THE HELP!
