Radiators and Supercharging...
89 S4 - Leaky crappy plastic tank radiator - Going to supercharge in a few months - Heard that some aftermarket radiators have clearance issues - Not sure what to do - Repair plastic or buy a aftermarket unit?
I'm not supercharging until the car is 100% correct, but I know I will then. What's the best choice as far as radiators? I get the impression that supercharging itself may mandate a aftermarket radiator just due to the increased demands on the cooling system...

Plenty of ppl running SC cars with the stock radiator. I believe David Lutz has installed a custom rad from 928 Intl and I know Carl at 928 Motorsports has one too. Shouldn't be a big job to take out the rad and have a shop install new end tanks.

Nick, weren't you just complaining about how crappy your car has been and how you have never driven it and how much it was costing and yada yada yada? If so, do you REALLY think it is a good idea to even be kicking around the THOUGHT of S/Cing your car right now??? Not trying to be an A-hole but you will probably take it that way anyhow. Just makes NO SENSE AT ALL to me... Though at least you did note that you won't be doing it till the car is 100% correct. THAT IS THE RIGHT IDEA and time to start looking in to it. I wouldn't even start this thread till you have at least 6 completely trouble free and enjoyable months in the car... but that is just me.

Oh, I don't have any now, and am not even sure what I'll get. I'm doing the work myself, and am really stubborn now. When it's tip top, and I have thrashed it successfully enough, I'll definitely complicate things with supercharging. Just hate the idea of paying to rebuild the plastic radiator if I'm going to replace it anyway. Would just assume get the aftermarket, now, if I'm likely to upgrade anyway.
I don't want a crazy boost, btw. Just around 4.5 -5lbs. Faster than my last Cobra was, a 425HP, heavy as all hell 2003 convertible. With the weight difference, I'm assuming that I'd be pretty happy with at least something approaching 400 engine horsepower, pretty modest, I think as far as forced induction goes...
Of course, the more the merrier, but it'll come down to long term reliability expectations. Still worth the effort to get to "at least that level" of straight line acceleration.

Would the rear Turbo set up be easier? I don't know personally...never tried either of them, but if you are shooting for 400rwhp I think you can get that pretty easy w/ that Turbo set up and it LOOKS easier than the S/C's...I don't know that it is, but it looks it...

I don't mind, even if it's another 20K by the time I'm done. Just has to be faster than my fastest past car, by then, which isn't all that impressive anyway, relative to what's "out there..."
I'll change it all out, whatever it needs. Not even in a rush. Just stubbornly doing it myself, and kind of molding it into my "vision" of this car.
I'm putting more thought into where I'll be adding sound-deadening lately than the performance stuff. I want "the perfect vehicle", by my tastes, to make the least of late night 2-4 hour drives. I live where I work. If I go anywhere, it's probably that sort of trip.
Fast, downplayed, overpowered, relatively silent, NON-CLUNKY, comfortable, killer stereo, "speed ticket limiting electronics" & reasonably reliable... No rear spoiler. No rear wiper. Oh yea, and I think I want fenderskirts too, dammit...
And I want some bullet proofing, here, and here, and here. And a telephone with a scrambler. And one of those police scanner things, so I can talk to space ships. Fog lights, in case I'm in a swamp and most definitely, the optional machine gun turrets...
Is this all there is???

I'll certainly read some posts about it. ~400 would be great. Frankly, I already have traction issues. I can't imagine what it would be like with 30-40% more torque.
Kind of want LSD, or even PSD too, while I'm at it... Or maybe there's a problem there. I often break loose, and it's always the passenger side rear tire first. Car corrects itself, but it seems "off" from my expectations... Might just be the tires. They're old... Almost 8 year old Potenzas on CSII's. Light cracking in treads, I was told...

The thicker core of our new radiator is compatable with all of our 928 Motorsports kits. No installation issues whatsoever.
Have also sold 2 of these radiators to 928 customers with Murph kits... one fit and the other could not be made to fit.
The Murph kit has its air intake box very close to the cooling core of the radiator, and seems to be an issue when upgrading to the aftermarket radiator.

Speaking from a MURF 928 perspective regarding the original question.....
The thicker aftermarket radiators make for a tight fit for the air box on the MURF 928 sc kits. Some people have done it with no problems and others had some definite fitment issues.
Most problems with radiators are either they are clogged, causing over heating issues, or they are leaking. Either way a new stock style radiator solves both issues and guarantees no fitment issues with the MURF 928 kits.
The rest of the forced induction kits on the market do not have any problem with the aftermarket radiators (that I know of) because they get air to the sc or turbo in a different fashion.
400 rwhp typically needs between 6-8 psi boost. The MURF 928 Stage 1 kit did a little over 400 rwhp on an 87 automatic with cats. Other Stage 1 kits have done about the same, little less-little more, but with various other mods to the cars. For the record, MURF 928 Stage III kits get about 500 rwhp.

I can't speak for the rear turbo because I do not have any experience or firsthand knowledge of what that setup requires. I’m not aware of anyone running one today but I could be wrong on that.

No to hijack this thread.. but I have a follow up question for Tim.
Tim are you seeing any problems running 6-8psi with the stock head gaskets? One last question what does the stage 1 setup cost I don't see any pricing on your website?

I ran the stock radiator for years with no overheating troubles (with A/C). Driving a S/C on the street your just not under boost long enough to overcome the 928 cooling system. This year I installed the C/R rad. Very nice unit. But you can see where my intake is located............
