I paid $10.5k for my '87 S4 auto.
Put about another $11k into it doing: tb/wp, trans work, wheels/tires, shocks/alignment, exhaust upgrades, new stereo, new tail lights & driving lights, steering wheel, sport shifter, armrest console, various upgrades and toys.
Sold it for $15k to make the wife happy after getting my GTS.
Paid $36.5k for my GTS and have over $15k in it since and wouldn't sell it for anything, including making the wife happy. I plan on putting much more into it with an engine rebuild (doesn't need it, I just want +450rwhp). Then some Champagne Pasche sport seats and Fikse FM5's and new rubber. Boy, the wife is gonna be pissed.

I'm with you, having had both the 44 is definitely infinitely cheaper on the wallet..
Once upon a time I was told "If you want the flagship you better have a big wallet..." by the mechanic replacing the engine in the S4...
A 15K 944 / 951 will dog a 928 all day long, and be cheaper to own at the end of the day....
What do you really need with 2 heads anyway?
Most 928's I have seen are little more than a waste of Aluminum... But that is just my opinion...

Doing it yourself definitely makes the numbers come out more in your favor. I paid $3200 for my '85 928S bought non-running with expired inspection. Now she purrs like a kitten, and I've put in about $600 all told. Since it runs so nice now and passed inspection, I could probably get $5k if I waited for the right buyer, but $4500.
If I were smart, I'd list her for sale right now, but I enjoy it too much and plan to keep her forever. I'm sure I'll be upside down after I finish the interior.

Purchased 2 years ago - initial investment of $1,000 with $800 added the first two weeks, included in the price were new tires and hoses, and she hasn't needed anything but gas and oil changes since....
With about 30,000 miles added to the clock!
But first you'd need to find a $1,000 944 that wasn't in the junk yard.

Umm... because they're better than one?
I suggest to rephrase the original question: How much do you have in the car excluding maintenance and non-mechanical crap (like stereos).
Maintenance shouldn't count, because then all cars are totally upside-down in value.
If you were to total up the the cost of the car, the repairs and mechanical upgrades (and Champagne leather...), you would have a far more appropriate understanding of how deep a money pit it is.
I still have my head above water, but I won't take out the calculator to find out exactly how much above water.

944's are nice cars, but let's just face the facts, they are not as nice as 928's and will never be.
Regardless of how fast you make them, you will still be driving a 944. They were much cheaper to make and it showed.
Now stop being so bitter.

Also, 944's were never as fast 928's of the same year. That's just the way it is.

Bought mine 6 months ago for $10k from the original owner who had kept it up for 16 years, not so much the last 6 years. I've put in about $10k for belts, wp, hoses, m.mts, brakes, clutch, steering whl,... Probably worth some where in the middle, if the gov't passes cash for 928s. Driving this car is the reward. The looks and the comments you get are the icing on the cake. Don't see a reason why I would ever want to sell it.

IMO, 928s are not collectible because they DO NOT GET maintained - heretofore and among those not on teh Interweb at least. Other collectibles (993TT, F-cars, etc.) have dollars poured onto them (with many beading off and running down the drain) and come with a perception that they hold their value. But, it isn't really true. Any old car costs a lot of money to keep in good condition. The question is was it $30k in bills in the last two years so that you can sell it for $50k? Or was it $10k in the last two years so that you can sell it for $18K?
