Opps, I think I opened up a can of worms!

PS. I meant it as a poll of our love for 928's. I read an article that really annoyed me. Some guy said 928's are not collectable because they are too expensive to maintain. I did the math and thought it really isn't that bad -- compared to how wonderfull the 928 is to own and drive and enjoy.

Just yeasterday -- I hammered mine under a small overpass and smiled from ear to ear at the music of my Borla echo'ing back at me.

FYI, I find the 944 more expensive to maintain, and less able to withstand heavy abuse.

Serious answer first. I paid $13k for my '85 back in 1992 and have probably put in another $5-6k in maintenance and some upgrades and toys. So maybe not too bad. Probably worth about $5-6 now and I'm just guessing.

Emotional answer now: Who cares? We drive these cars for the complete fun and enjoyment of it. I'd buy another one tomorrow if I thought the wife wouldn't kill me.

Speaking of the wife. Couldn't you ask the same question? How much money have you put into your wife and what is she worth now?

Maybe I'll get that 2nd 928.

OOooh no. You didn't add up the receipts, tell me you didn't...

Bad idea.

The biggest reason I will never add up the receipts is the same reason I bought the car in the first place. I plan on investing lots more time and money in it without a thought of getting any of it back because it's time (and money) well spent.

I just got mine this year for $6800 CDN, but I am sure I will spend tons more on it and it still will be worth $6800!!

I think I could sell my car for about 75% of total investment to date, but then I spent some time talking to Paul Champagne Saturday, admiring superchargers, etc. so the equation could change quickly ;-)

Don't you normally have to pay to have them leave, not being able to sell them.

Selling them would be SOOOO much easier.

I’m not worried about adding up how much I’ve spent.

Dollar for dollar, I think it’s still one of the best values out there…. especially, if you start looking at what the 993 plus guys are spending and not to mention boats, RVs, aircraft, or exotic vacations.

First rule of fanatic automobile ownership...
As a fanatic will never recoup your investment of time and money when you sell your automobile.

The first rule of how to remain fanatical about a specific vehicle...
Do NOT total your expenses if you aren't finished fixing things...and then ONLY if you are happy with the results.

Purchase price: $28K. And it's paid for.

What I've got into restoration, repairs, preventative maintenance, and upgrades: $30K (Yes, I foolishly added up the receipts!)

What I think the car's worth in today's market: ~$25-26K

Am I WAY upside down? You betcha! But jeez, the car's well-sorted and reliable!

Would I sell it? Yeah, I'd consider it - cuz I'm thinkin' about a new DD. Made the mistake of driving one of the new A6 3.0 supercharged models. Sweet!

I've spent a few hundred $ in gas/time already just looking for (the right) 928 and I still don't have one!

Thought:

Even though I'm way upside down in the car, what it really means is that for $58K, I have a relatively rare, beautiful, high-performance, exotic GT of an automobile that is currently in topnotch shape.

In today's automotive world, you could perhaps do a little better for $58K - but you could also do far worse!
