Hopeful future owner....opinions?
Sorry guys, I'll delete this after some opinions are posted. I just found a 1980 828S, Euro. I've confirmed it a Euro from the side markers and fog light. It's only got 55k miles on it.
The owner has had it for 10 years, is a mechanic and got it from the original owner who stored it most of the time. He's only put 5000 miles on it since he's had it, and needs to get rid of it to concentrate on other projects. He also has some classic muscle cars he's working on. He said he'd disclose all he knows, and seems like a stand up seller. He said he wouldn't hesitate to drive it across the country, mechanically he's confident about it.
Paint is about 5 years old. He put a new radiator, timing belt, distributor rotor water pump and fuel pump when he got it, receipts included. The bad, it's got a small rust repair on a fender (primer), the interior is cracked and dirty. He said it was like that when he bought it from being in storage and neglected. The AC doesn't work, he said it needed a compressor.
I think it could be had for $3000-3500.
Thoughts on price?
Also, why wont carfax recognize the VIN? It says I'm not placing enough digits/letters for a full VIN. Is this a porsche issue, or the fact it's a Euro spec car?

How *bad* is the interior? Speaking from experience, interiors can get expensive if you restore them correctly. AC compressors are also not cheap, but not vital to a functional car [also speaking from experience].
What options does it have? Did you drive it? Leaks?

jleidal, thanks for that.
Seats are shot at every seam, isn't particularly dirty, just looks as if it's spent some storage outside, and no one put protectant or cover on anything. Dash is cracked, buttons look a bit worn for the windows. I've definately seen worse projects on this forum.
I'm going to drive it this afternoon, the owner says he has no concern, crank it up and go. I'll look for leaks where it's typically stored. Any more insight from the VIN or throught on the price. I'd like to be prepared to make him an offer today if it's in line. I'd post a pic of the interior, but I don't have a host.

Hard to say without pics but if it's a good runner the engine will be the bulk of the price anyway. The fact that it's a euro make it worth more. Start low make him talk you up.
Is this what you are after?

From the sounds of it, the interior is complete. That's a good starting point. Pod cracks are normal. Dashes are a bit more expensive to repair. Buttons are fairly cheap and very easy to replace. If the car mechanically sound and you're ok with a rough interior, then $3000 is a decent deal. I wouldn't go much higher than your aforementioned $3500. Like I said, interiors can get $$$$.
From the VIN output, that is definitely a Euro model. Its also the sought after 300HP powerplant.

what you really want to find out is if its a Euro S this can be determined form the engine code thats found just under the top rad hose where it connects to the water bridge
for a 928 NON S 80-83 engine 229 hp, codes are
M28/09 5 speed
M28/10 Auto 3 speed
For the Euro S = 300hp
M28/12 auto 3 speed
M28/11 5 speed
for a 928 NON S 80-83 engine 229 hp, codes are
M28/09 5 speed
M28/10 Auto 3 speed
For the Euro S = 300hp
M28/12 auto 3 speed
M28/11 5 speed

Try putting blanks before the VIN to get the right number of digits. and try both Carfax.com and Autocheck.com, (no need to buy unless it recognizes the vin and says it has some records.
55k on the US speedo, but what did it have one Euro it was imported with. Also very rare for the odometer to have never had any issues stopping. Why would a 55k mile car be repainted with a trashed interior?
Non S Euro is little different from a US 78/79, ie the bottom of the barrel. Its a three strikes can in my estimation, repaint, bad interior, CIS that wasn't driven much. Skip it.

Carfax didn't work for me, AutoCheck.com did, put 7 blanks in front of the vin.
