Default Rim Road Rash Repair – Bondo, JB Weld, what works best?

Hi all -
I ordered some Wurth wheel paint and clear Lacquer and plan on touching up road-rash on the GTS rims this weekend. I’ve searched through the RL archive and some said they’ve used Bondo, but I have my doubts how long that would hold up due to the heat. Would a little JB Weld work better? Is there something better??

Thanks! / Bruce

I do not think jb weld would work well as it is VERY hard to sand down I have used bondo on my phonedials with great success, they are over 4 years old now.

JoeJoe - Just "normal" bondo--not the kind with kitty hair or something? Thanks / Bruce

+1, Bondo. I'm part way through doing a set of D90's. The Bondo sands really nicely, 150 (mostly)-400-800 grit.

Rob - Thank you. Amazing that it sticks considering the heat and stress, but I think I'll give it a shot. / Bruce

I bookmarked this how-to quite some time ago for when I tackle this project. It appears the pictures no longer work, but the step-by-step instructions are still there:

My winter wheels on my A8 came pre gouged, I used JB Quick to fill the gouges and it worked fine. Not particularly hard to sand but I think I used a sanding disc, mostly.

Jarrod - Thanks, I saw a similar web site on RL. I guess the secret is patience... It's a 4-day weekend, so I guess I have no reason to hurry. Thanks again / Bruce

I just went and looked at the rims again. I think I'm going to have to go with the bondo. Some of the areas are going to require a lot of feathering; not sure I can do that with JB weld (?) Should be fun

try the jb weld first you dont have to wait 24 hrs for the cure if you leave the wheel in the sun you can be sanding in about 6 hours use a piece of sandpaper with a finer grit and back it up with a bondo spreader

Can you use bondo right on the lip of the wheel? Seems like it would crack/chip off when you mounted the tire. I keep seeing the large metal tang sliding around the soaped tire and rim. Seems like that might be hard on bondo. Could be that tang is not in direct contact with the wheel. I dunno. would enjoy some education on this one.

Dan - I'm wondering the same thing--which is why I asked. It seems JB weld would hold up better. I dunno, may be I'll do 2 rims with bondo and 2 with JB weld and see what's best. I'll take a couple pictures and post them after they're done. Then I guess time will tell. / Bruce
