Giovanni,

I thought about that as well, but if that is the case it would have a definite milkshake in the bottom end.

Careful there - I didn't do new guides, just stem seals.
I agree though, the price rocked for 32 valves' work and the deck.

And a little bit of black floating around could be normal for an engine. Could you post up a pic of what you really saw? As black sludge doesnt normally come from coolant. And if it was from gasket material you would have a milkshake.

When you say it smelt like coolant, how bad does it smell??? and you put the dye in the coolant, can you see any of that in the oil (longshot I know)?
Fresh oil - I will do the pull at a friend's place so I need to drive on a short distance. And I think I will try a "stop leaks" additives that was suggested by my mechanic. Long shot but maybe worth the try !!!

It was not just a little floating around ...

I did try with a blue light for the dye but nothing. I didn't took any pictures. Coolant smell was very noticeable.

But if it was the case, should I have some oil in the expansion tank ( oil pressure is higher than coolant )?

Stop driving it!! You're going to get a catastrophic fail! Tow it or flatbed or something.

What is the working pressure in the oil cooler? 60-80psi? and in the radiator about 15 psi? In that case, yes, you should see oil residue in the expansion tank unless the pressure is about equal then for one or the other reason its not showing. Can anyone confirm the pressure in the oil cooler?

I say again - take the car to a shop with a good gas analyzer and see what is in the exhaust. Could tell you a lot right there. No need to yank the heads if you don't need to. If you have a small head leak it should show up there. For baseline get another 928 owner of similar MY/Tune to go with you for a baseline. I would think someone would sniff your backside (928) for $50 CDN.

The oil cooler will see full system pressure (100+PSI)

Fraggle,

I am still not overly convinced that he has a headgasket or another breach in the engine.
That is why I gave the tests to do that I did. These would absolutely pinpoint the problem when done. But it is Oups's car after all and if he wants to jump the gun and redo the engine only to still be loosing coolant that is his perogative

The small amount of black in the oil could just be sediment from a postponed oil change, or from sitting with old oil in the engine. So I would not be worried about that at all.

If you do the hot leakdown test with the engine and it is a headgasket breach then you will get a film of coolant, And if you drain the oil out first on a hot engine and replace the catch can you will be able to see it in the pan instead.

+1 on towing...Triple A is about 65 bucks for the year and they give me 4 free tows withing 200 miles of my house it's a great investment, remember sometimes not all goes well during rebuilds and my need them again. Adding additives will just make for more problems. Just my 2 cents

Thanks for your help guys. I will do a small recap:

1. Issue : milky deposit in the filler neck - oil changed was done - still have the oil with no visible coolant
2. Block test done - negative (3 times)
3. Coolant pressure test done but only for 30 minutes or so (hot and cold) no leaks. Cap changed
4. No oil in the expansion tank
5. Driver side head has a weld (oil leak from that area)
6. A lot of oil sludge found yesterday.

Sorry did not come out right. They will tow it wherever you want within 200 miles from where the car is, if outside of that they charge by the mile.
